A single moonbeam painted a silver stripe across the floor of the den. Just last night, we floated with Orion the owl on his first wondrous flight. Tonight, our story begins down on the forest floor, where another little friend was just stirring. His name was Bramble, and he was a very small, very fluffy bear cub. He was snuggled up tight against his mama, warm as a toasted marshmallow. But something pulled him from the edge of sleep.

It was a sound. A melody, faint and sweet, drifting through the trees. It wasn't the wind, and it wasn't the creek. It was a song... soft and low, like a lullaby carried on the breeze. Bramble’s sleepy curiosity got the better of him. He wriggled free from his mama’s warm hug and padded on velvet paws to the mouth of the den. The night air was cool and smelled of pine needles and damp earth. The song was a little clearer out here.

It seemed to be calling to him. So, step by gentle step, he followed. The forest was not scary at all. It was full of quiet magic. The moon turned the ferns to silver lace. A family of mushrooms glowed with a soft, green light, like tiny lanterns left on just for him. He tiptoed past sleeping bluebells, their heads bowed as if in prayer. And all the while, the beautiful, mysterious music pulled him forward. He came to a clearing by a slow, sleepy river.

The music was all around him now, a gentle humming that made the air itself seem to vibrate with peace. Bramble peeked through the leaves of a weeping willow tree. And his little bear heart gave a happy leap. It was a cloud of fireflies. Hundreds of them. They floated in a great, glowing sphere above the water. Their lights pulsed in perfect time with the humming lullaby. They were singing their own babies to sleep. Tiny, blinking baby fireflies, nestled on floating lily pads.

Bramble watched for a long, long time, his own eyelids growing heavy. The big fireflies hummed their low, sweet song. The baby fireflies blinked their lights… on… and off… on… and off. A big yawn stretched Bramble’s jaws. He turned and padded slowly, sleepily, back to his own warm den. He curled back up beside his mama, the firefly lullaby humming softly in his dreams. And soon, the whole forest was quiet, dreaming under the light of the moon.
