A single thread of moonlight, as thin as a whisper, landed right on Pipkin the dormouse's nose. It tickled. It wasn't a shimmering dewdrop path like the one Silas the snail found, but it woke him all the same. Pipkin blinked his sleepy eyes. He was curled in his nest of moss and milkweed fluff, high inside a hollow of the great oak tree. He was supposed to be fast asleep. But now... he was not. He peeked his head out of the little round door to his home.
The forest was washed in silver. Every leaf, every branch, was outlined in quiet light. And that's when he saw it. Just outside his door, a spider was working. But oh, this was no ordinary spider. Her legs were like spun silver, and her web... her web was not for catching flies. She was weaving with threads of moonlight. With one delicate leg, she would catch a moonbeam. With another, she would pluck a tiny, glittering speck of stardust from the air.
Pipkin wasn't frightened. He was filled with wonder. He crept a little closer. The spider turned, her many eyes like tiny, dark jewels. Her voice was not a voice you hear with your ears, but one you feel inside, like the soft rustle of autumn leaves. "Hello, little one," she whispered. "You are awake when you should be dreaming." "I... I couldn't sleep," Pipkin squeaked. "I am Elara," the spider said gently. "I am weaving dreams for the forest.
But I am missing something. Something for the very coziest dream of all." She pointed a silvery leg to a branch just a little ways away. "The moon-petal flower is open. It only shares its pollen when the moon is at its highest. I cannot leave my loom. Could you... could you bring some to me?" Pipkin felt a little flutter of excitement. An adventure! He nodded his head so fast his whiskers wobbled. "Yes! I can help!" He scampered out along the branch.
The bark felt rough and real beneath his paws. And there it was. A single white flower, glowing softly, its petals open to the sky. Pipkin buried his nose in its center and came away with his whiskers completely dusted in shimmering, sweet-smelling pollen. He carefully made his way back to Elara. He felt very brave. "Oh, thank you," she whispered, her voice full of warmth. "You have a kind and helpful heart, little dormouse.
And for your kindness, this first and best dream is for you." Elara took the pollen from his whiskers with the tip of one leg. She began to weave it into her web, along with the starlight and the moonbeams. The air grew warm and smelled of honey and home. A single, glowing thread detached from the web. It floated down and wrapped around Pipkin like the softest blanket he had ever felt. He didn't see a dream.
He felt it. He felt the warmth of sunshine on his fur. He tasted the sweet crunch of a perfect hazelnut. He heard a soft lullaby his mother used to sing. The feeling of pure coziness spread from his nose to the tip of his tail. He gave a big, sleepy yawn, and curled right back up in his nest. And as Elara the spider continued weaving dreams for the rest of the forest, Pipkin the dormouse slept soundly, and safely, until the morning sun arrived.
