A single cloud can weigh over a million pounds. But this little cloud was brand new, and light as a feather. Almost as light as our friend Leo the Leaf, when he finally let go and danced on the moonlit wind. His name was Nimbus, and he was just a tiny puff in the big, dark, velvet sky. He drifted along on a gentle sigh of a breeze, a soft piece of cotton candy floating through the stars. He was on an adventure to watch the world sleep.

First, he floated over a little town. The houses were like sleepy cats, all curled up and quiet. Tiny lights glowed in some of the windows, like fallen stars tucked into bed for the night. He drifted past a baker’s shop. Even though it was closed, he imagined the warm, sweet smell of bread that must fill the air in the morning. He saw a little red bicycle left in a yard, its wheels still, dreaming of another day of races down the lane.

The breeze then carried him out over the great, dark sea. He saw the moon make a shimmering path of silver light across the water. The waves whispered to the shore… a steady, calming shhhhh, shhhhh. He saw the dark shape of a whale rise for a breath, sending up a misty spray that looked like a tiny cloud, just like him. Nimbus felt a happy little jiggle. He wasn't the only one awake out here.

Then, the wind guided him back over land, to a deep, quiet forest. The treetops looked like they were brushed with silver paint by the moon. He heard the soft call of an owl… a gentle, sleepy whooo-whooo. It wasn't a scary sound at all. It was the forest whispering its own lullaby. Down below, he heard the faint trickle of a tiny stream, making its way over smooth stones. He saw a family of deer, nestled together in a clearing, their noses twitching in their dreams.

He wondered what they were dreaming of. Maybe they were dreaming of sweet green grass, or leaping over that very same sparkling stream. As he drifted, Nimbus began to feel… different. A little heavier. He had gathered so much starlight on his fluffy edges. He had collected the quiet wishes from the sleeping town, and the salty spray from the whale's breath. The night air was growing cooler, and he felt himself growing fuller, softer.

He wasn't just a little puff of cotton anymore. He was becoming a promise. A promise of a cool morning drink for a thirsty flower. He wasn't sad to change. He felt… ready. Ready to be closer to the quiet world he had been watching all night. So, very gently, he began to let go. One tiny, shimmering drop at a time. It felt like a happy sigh. Then another drop. And another. He was turning into the softest, quietest mist you can imagine.

Each drop was a tiny piece of his cloudy self, carrying a little bit of moonlight and a memory of the sea down to the earth. He wasn't floating ABOVE the world anymore. He was becoming part of it. He settled into the soft green moss at the bottom of a great oak tree. He landed on the silky petals of a sleeping daisy in a garden. He kissed the nose of a garden gnome, leaving a single, perfect droplet.

And as the first hint of morning light touched the sky, Nimbus was still there. He wasn't a cloud in the sky anymore. He was a thousand tiny jewels of dew, sparkling on every leaf and blade of grass. He was still watching over the world, just in a new, closer way, waiting to greet the sun.
