Did you know that a single swan can have over twenty-five THOUSAND feathers? Just like our little friend Ripples the raindrop found his own gentle journey last night, tonight we’re going to follow just one of those tiny, perfect feathers as it begins an adventure of its own. So snuggle down deep… get cozy… and let’s begin. High, high above the sleeping world, a mother bird was gliding home on the night air. She was a beautiful barn owl, with feathers as white and soft as fresh-fallen snow.
As she swooped silently towards the old oak tree where her nest was waiting, one tiny, fluffy feather from deep beneath her wing wiggled loose. It was a downy feather, the softest kind, meant for keeping little ones warm. For a moment, it clung to her, and then… a gentle puff of wind lifted it away. The feather didn't fall. Oh, no. It floated. It danced and swirled, tumbling over and over in the cool, quiet air. The world below was a dark, patchwork quilt of fields and forests, stitched together with silvery threads of moonlight on little streams.
The feather felt weightless, free… like a tiny cloud with nowhere to be, and all the time in the world to get there. It drifted over a meadow where the daisies were all asleep, their white faces bowed down as if they were dreaming. It saw a family of deer, stepping so quietly through the tall grass. Then, the breeze carried it over a little pond. The water was as still and dark as glass, and the feather saw the stars reflected in it… it felt like it was floating between two night skies.
A little frog croaked a soft, sleepy, ‘ribbit,’ and the feather twirled in reply. It wasn't lonely. The whole, quiet, nighttime world was its companion. Then, a new current of air, warm and smelling of pine needles, lifted it higher. It carried the feather towards the big, old oak tree, the very one the mother owl had flown to. The feather began to spiral downwards, slower… and slower… like a snowflake in no hurry to land. It drifted past thick branches and clusters of green leaves rustling softly in the breeze.
Where would it finally come to rest? A soft bed of moss? A patch of clover? It didn't land on the ground at all. The gentle breeze guided it right into a small, empty nest tucked safely in the crook of a branch. It was a perfect little cup made of twigs and soft grass, waiting for a new family. The feather settled right in the middle, a spot of pure white in the cozy darkness. It had found its purpose. It wasn't for flying anymore… it was for warmth. For comfort.
For home. And there in the quiet nest, under the light of the moon and the stars, the little feather rested… a soft, white secret, waiting to keep the next little birds safe and warm.
