From Earth, we can see about five thousand stars with just our eyes. One of those stars, a tiny, curious one named Twinkle, loved watching the clouds drift by… especially the puffy little ones like our friend Nimbus, who we met in our last story. Twinkle was nestled high up in the deep, velvet blanket of the night sky. Every evening was the same. She’d pop out, give a little shimmer, and watch the world far, far below. It was beautiful, but… oh, it was so far away. Tonight, Twinkle felt a little wiggle of adventure in her pointy rays.
What did the world LOOK like up close? What did it sound like when it was sleeping? Just then, a long, silvery moonbeam stretched down, down, down… almost touching the treetops. "Hmm," thought Twinkle. And with a brave little leap, she grabbed onto that moonbeam and began to slide. It felt like the most wonderful slide in the whole universe! Down she went, past the other sleepy stars, until the world wasn't a pattern of lights anymore. It was REAL. First, she peeked into a quiet forest.
There, curled up in a cozy den, was a little fox, its tail wrapped around its nose like a warm scarf. The fox gave a tiny, sleepy yawn, and Twinkle felt a yawn bubble up inside her, too. She slid a little further and saw a river, flowing like a ribbon of liquid moonlight between dark, sleepy hills. It didn't make a loud noise, just a gentle… shhhhh… a hush that seemed to sing the whole world to sleep. Then, she floated over a small town. One by one, the little yellow squares of light in the windows went dark.
Click. Click. Poof. Everyone was tucking in for the night. For just a moment, Twinkle felt a little bit lonely. So far from her starry home. But then she looked up. And she saw them. Thousands of her brothers and sisters, all twinkling back at her. They weren't just dots in the sky. They were family, watching over her. A warm feeling spread through all of Twinkle’s five points. She wasn't alone at ALL. She was part of the quiet world below, and the great, watchful sky above. With a happy little sigh, she began to climb back up the moonbeam, her heart full of sleepy wonders.
Back in her spot, she snuggled into the darkness. But tonight, her light wasn't just a tiny, faraway shimmer. It was a warm, gentle glow, a promise to the sleeping fox and the quiet river that she would be right there, watching over them, until the sun came to wake them in the morning.
