The biggest star we know is one thousand, seven hundred times wider than our sun. But our story tonight isn't about a giant. It’s about a very small, very curious star. Last night, we heard how Lumi the glow-worm found her own light down on the forest floor. Tonight… we look up. High above the world, in the big, dark, velvety quilt of the night sky, lived a little star named Twinkle. Most nights, Twinkle was happy to stay in its spot, shimmering and shining with all the other stars.
But tonight was different. A little thread of curiosity pulled at it. What was it REALLY like down there, on that dark, quiet patch of green? So, very gently, Twinkle let go. It didn't fall. Oh, no. It floated. Drifting down, down, down, like a single snowflake on a windless evening. The other stars grew distant, and the dark patch below grew larger, until it wasn't a patch anymore. It was a forest. Twinkle hovered just above the tallest pine trees, listening.
The world wasn't silent at all. It was humming with quiet life. There. The soft whoosh of an owl’s wings, cutting through the air without a sound. And there. The tiny skitter-scratch of a field mouse scurrying over dry leaves, its nose twitching for a fallen seed. Twinkle drifted lower, over a little stream. It watched a family of raccoons, their clever paws like little hands, washing berries in the moonlit water.
It heard the gentle huff of a sleeping fawn, curled up beside its mother, its breath a tiny, misty cloud in the cool air. Every little sound was a note in a secret lullaby. Then, Twinkle saw it. A flicker of light near the roots of an old oak tree. A tiny, warm glow, moving slowly under a big fern leaf. It was a glow-worm. A little piece of the sky, living right down here on the ground. Seeing that small light, so brave and bright in the big darkness, made Twinkle’s own light feel warmer.
It felt like it had found a friend. Its curiosity satisfied, its little star-heart full, Twinkle knew it was time to go home. It gave a happy little shimmer, a silent goodbye to the glow-worm and the sleeping woods. Then, it began to float back up. Up… up… up. The tiny sounds of the forest blended back together into a single, peaceful hum. The trees became a forest again, and then just a dark, soft patch on the world below.
Soon, Twinkle was back in its proper place, nestled among its family. But now, when Twinkle looked down, it didn't just see a dark shape. It saw a whole world, full of quiet wonders and tiny, glowing friends. And it twinkled just a little bit BRIGHTER.
