Willow the dormouse pressed her tiny nose against a patch of glowing green moss. It was tucked into the root of an old oak tree, and it felt different from all the other moss in the forest. It was softer. And it was humming. It wasn't a loud hum, like a bumblebee. It was a quiet sound, like the forest breathing out a long, slow sigh. Willow tilted her head. She put her little ear right up to the green velvet. And that's when she heard it. A whisper. It was too soft to be the wind in the leaves.
It was too steady to be the trickle of the nearby stream. The moss was talking. But what was it saying? Willow came back the next day, and the day after that. She lay beside the moss, her whiskers twitching with curiosity. The whispers were always there, a gentle murmur she couldn't quite understand. It sounded like secrets. Important ones. Were they secrets about where the sweetest berries grew? Or where the badgers hid their shiny stones? She had to know. She tried everything to understand.
She wiggled her ears. She held a hollow acorn to the moss, like a tiny trumpet. But the words just danced away from her. One evening, tired from a long day of gathering seeds, Willow didn't try to listen at all. She just curled up in a tiny ball and rested her cheek against the soft, cool moss. She closed her eyes. And then, it happened. She didn't hear the secret with her ears. She felt it. Right through her cheek, and into her heart. The whispers weren't words. They were feelings. She felt the slow, patient strength of the oak tree’s roots, digging deep into the earth.
She felt the cool relief of a morning dewdrop landing on a thirsty leaf. She felt the quiet joy of a mushroom pushing its way up through the soil after a rain. The moss wasn't telling secrets about the forest. The moss was the forest, sharing how it felt to be alive. Willow took a deep breath. She didn't need to understand words. She just needed to be still, and to feel. The forest wasn't keeping secrets from her. It was inviting her to be part of its quiet song. From that night on, the moss was her special place.
Whenever she felt lonely or small, she would go and rest her head on its green pillow. She wouldn't try to listen for whispers anymore. She would just close her eyes, and feel the slow, steady peace of the whole world, humming her to sleep.
