Turn a PDF into an audiobook on your iPhone

Turn a PDF into audio on your iPhone. Have it read straight through, or ask for a short show on what matters. Upload needs Plus or Pro.

The short answer

Upload a PDF in the Lissin iPhone app. Ask for a straight read, or a short show on the part that matters. Uploading needs Plus or Pro. A normal PDF is read from its text, and a scan goes through OCR. The Free plan doesn't include document uploads.

How to do it

  1. Upload the PDF as it is

Leave the file whole. You don't need to turn it into text first. Uploading needs Plus or Pro. A normal PDF is read from the text already in the file. A scan, or a photo of a page, goes through OCR when the file has almost no text.

  2. Say how much of it matters

A short story or a set of notes can be a straight read. Say you want the file read as written. A long report is better as a show. Name the part you want, for example ten minutes on the findings, and say to skip the rest. Leave that out and the script tries to cover the file, then shortens it. Plus episodes can run up to 15 minutes. Pro episodes can run up to 25 minutes. Past roughly a hundred pages, name a section or the episode skims.

  3. Pick one voice or two

A straight read uses one narrator. A show can be one voice walking through the file, or two voices talking it through. Say which you want.

Questions

Can I turn a PDF into an audiobook on my iPhone?
Yes. Open Lissin on your iPhone, upload the PDF, and ask for a straight read. Uploading needs Plus or Pro. You need iOS 26 or later. There's no iPad app and no Android app.
Does uploading a PDF need Plus or Pro?
Yes. Plus is $9.99 / month for 7.5 hours of audio a week, and an episode can run up to 15 minutes. Pro is $19.99 / month for 30 hours a week, and an episode can run up to 25 minutes. The Free plan is 50 minutes a week, and document uploads are not included.
What about a scanned PDF?
Yes, when the file has almost no text. Lissin sends those pages to a vision model, which reads scans and photos of pages. Check the result on a messy scan.
Will it read every word?
Ask for a straight read and say so. If you don't, it tries to stay close to the file, and it may shorten it. On a long PDF, name the section you want. Past roughly a hundred pages, the episode has to skim to fit.
Can I make it shorter instead?
Yes. Ask for ten minutes on the findings and say to skip the rest.

What this does not do

Uploading a PDF needs Plus or Pro. The Free plan is 50 minutes a week, and document uploads are not included. A straight read is as close as this gets to an audiobook, and it still isn't a licensed one. A password-protected PDF won't open. A file that's mostly tables or charts loses most of its meaning once it's spoken. You make the episode on iPhone, on iOS 26 or later. There's no iPad app and no Android app.
