PDF to audio: hear the file, or make it a podcast
Plus or Pro can upload the PDF. Lissin reads the text, or uses OCR on a scan, then makes an episode. You can ask it to read the file straight through.
The short answer
PDF to audio here means you upload the file in the iPhone app and Lissin makes something you can listen to. Ask for a walk-through, or a podcast with one voice or two. Uploading needs Plus or Pro. A normal PDF is read from its text, and a scan goes through OCR. On a long file, name the chapters.
How to do it
Upload the file as it is
Leave the file whole. You don't need to turn it into text first. Uploading it needs Plus or Pro. A normal PDF is read from the text already in the file. A scan, or a photo of a page, goes through OCR, which can pick up handwriting and the labels on a figure.
Tell it how much of the document matters
Say which parts of a ninety-page report you want, for example ‘Fifteen minutes on the findings and what they mean for a UK reader, skip the methodology’. Without an instruction like that, the script tries to be faithful to the whole document and the result is flat.
Ask for a format that suits the material
For a dense argument, ask for two voices that disagree. For a set of results, ask for a single narrator who walks through them in order.

Questions
- Does a scanned PDF work?
- Yes. When Lissin finds almost no text in the file, it sends the pages to a vision model instead, which reads scans, photographs of pages and multilingual documents. You do not have to flag it.
- Is this just text-to-speech on the PDF?
- No. A read-aloud app speaks the file. Lissin writes a script from it, cuts and explains, then voices that script. If you want the document read as written, say so. That's as close as this gets to an audiobook, and it still isn't a licensed one.
- Is PDF to audio free?
- The show can be. The free plan is 50 minutes a week, and an episode stops at 10 minutes. Uploading the PDF isn't on that plan. Plus is 3 files a week. Pro is 25. There's no converter on the website that skips the app.
- How long can the PDF be?
- Lissin handles long documents. Past roughly a hundred pages, ask for a specific section instead of the whole thing, or the episode has to skim to fit.
- Can I do this on Android?
- No. You make the episode on iPhone, and the phone needs iOS 26 or later. There's no iPad app. A show that's already public will play in a browser.
What this does not do
A PDF that's mostly tables or charts loses most of its meaning once it's spoken, whether the text was already in the file or read by OCR. A password-protected file won't open. The script is an interpretation, so a contract, a filing or a spec still needs to be read as written.
