Skye could feel the wind under feathers that weren't quite there yet. She was perched on the very edge of the nest, a woven cup of twigs and soft moss, high in the crook of an old oak tree. Below, the world was a dizzying patchwork of green and brown. Her mother chirped softly behind her, a sound like smooth pebbles rolling together. “Not yet, little one. Soon.” But Skye wasn’t listening to the words. She was listening to the rustle of the leaves, a sound that promised adventure. Her brothers and sisters were huddled in the center of the nest, peeping for lunch.

But Skye was a creature of the edge. Every day, she’d inch a little closer, mesmerized by the vast, open sky. She saw the older birds, the robins and the finches, catch currents of air and ride them like invisible rivers. They didn't flap frantically; they simply… trusted. And Skye believed she could trust, too. Her mother would bring a worm, and say, “Patience, Skye. Your wings need the sun. They need time. Their strength is still sleeping.” But patience felt like a cage. The urge to fly was a physical ache, a thrumming deep in her tiny chest.

She’d stretch her wings, feeling the flimsy down and the few stiff quills that had pushed through. They felt strong enough. Didn't they? So, one bright afternoon, while her mother was away, Skye decided that "soon" was now. She took a deep breath, shuffled to the absolute precipice, and leaped. For one glorious second, it worked. The air caught her, held her. She was flying! The world wasn't a patchwork anymore, it was a vast, beautiful whole. She saw the shimmer of the creek. Then, her left wing buckled. It just… folded.

The trust she’d felt vanished, replaced by a frantic, useless flapping. The air was no longer a river holding her up; it was an empty space she was falling through. The ground came up fast. She didn't hit it with a thud, but tumbled into a thick patch of clover, the landing cushioned and gentle. She lay there for a moment, stunned, her heart beating like a drum against the earth. The world smelled of damp soil and sweet flowers, so different from the airy scent of the nest. She looked up. High, high above, a tiny circle of twigs against the blue.

Her home. It looked impossibly far away. And in that moment, feeling the solid ground beneath her and seeing the sky she wasn't ready for, she finally understood her mother's words. Strength wasn't a feeling. It was a fact. And hers was still growing.
