Ollie the Otter’s Twilight Treasure: A Gentle Riverbed Adventure

Ollie the otter had exactly three whiskers on the left side of his nose that wiggled when he was curious. And tonight, under a sky of sleepy purple and orange, he was very curious indeed. He was supposed to be swimming home for bed. But the river was so cool and quiet. So he took one last playful dive, just for himself. Down, down, down he went, a little silver arrow in the twilight water. He loved looking for treasures on the riverbed. Shiny shells, interesting twigs, and perfectly round pebbles. But this time, he saw something new.

Tucked beside a patch of river grass, something was glimmering. It wasn't the silvery flash of a fish. It wasn't the pearly white of a shell. He swam closer, his three special whiskers twitching and tickling his nose. It was a stone. But what a stone! It was perfectly smooth and round, like a drop of moonlight that had turned solid. As Ollie nudged it gently with his nose, a soft light bloomed from inside it. A warm, milky glow, like a firefly caught in a jar. The light didn't startle him. It felt... friendly. It pulsed with a soft, steady beat.

Ba-dum. Ba-dum. Like a tiny, quiet heart. A little thrill of adventure fluttered in Ollie's chest. Where did this wonderful stone come from? He decided he had to find out. Pushing the glowing stone with his paws, he swam along the river bottom. The light danced ahead of him, showing him the way. It led him past the big sleepy turtle rock. It guided him around the bend where the lily pads grew. And then, it pulled him toward a thick curtain of weeping willow branches that tickled the water's surface. He’d never gone behind them before.

What could possibly be back there? He took a little otter-sized breath and bravely pushed through the soft, green leaves. And he gasped. It was a secret grotto. A tiny, hidden cove where the water was perfectly still and clear. The walls were covered in moss as soft as a brand-new blanket. The little glowing stone rolled to a stop in a small hollow in the moss, filling the entire grotto with its gentle, peaceful light. It was the coziest place Ollie had ever seen. He yawned a big, wide yawn that showed all his tiny teeth.

He climbed out of the water and curled up on the softest patch of moss. The light from the stone was like a nightlight, made just for him. He closed his little eyes, feeling safe and warm, and drifted off to sleep. And in the quiet of the hidden grotto, the little stone kept watch over the dreaming otter.
