An acorn shell is so perfectly smooth, it feels like a tiny wooden cup in your hand. Last time, we talked about understanding our feelings, even the big, confusing ones. Pip was a very small squirrel in a very big forest. His home was a cozy nook in an old oak tree, and his most important job was finding acorns. One sunny afternoon, while he was carefully burying a particularly fine acorn, he heard something.
A tiny sound, almost lost in the rustle of the leaves. Cheep… cheep… It was a sad sound. A lost sound. Pip’s whiskers twitched with curiosity. He followed the sound, scampering down a long, mossy branch. And there, huddled near the trunk, was a baby bird. It was just a little puff of feathers and fear, trembling all over. Pip looked up. Waaay up. He could just see the bird's nest, a messy cup of twigs tucked high in the branches.
The baby bird must have fallen. What could a small squirrel do? The baby bird was too scared to move, and too little to fly back up on its own. Pip tried to gently nudge the bird with his nose, but it just shivered more. He chattered encouragingly, but the little bird didn't understand squirrel-talk. Pip felt a pang of sadness for the little creature. It felt so lonely and small, and for a moment, Pip felt lonely and small, too.
He sat very still, his fluffy tail wrapped around his feet. He looked up at the nest again, then at the wide, blue sky beyond the leaves. And that’s when he saw her. The mother bird, flying in anxious circles high above, calling for her lost baby. And suddenly, Pip had a wonderful, very squirrely idea. He couldn't carry the baby bird up. But maybe… he could bring the mother bird down. He scurried to the very end of the branch, right where a cluster of bright red leaves grew.
He grabbed the stem with his paws and shook it with all his might. He chattered his loudest squirrel-chatter, a sound that meant, “Look! Right here! Something important is happening!” The mother bird stopped her circles. She saw the flash of red leaves shaking. She heard the little squirrel’s call. And then she saw him. Her baby. Safe. She glided down, landing silently on the branch. She cooed a soft, sweet song, and the baby bird, hearing its mother, finally felt brave.
It hopped towards her. The mother bird looked at Pip for one long moment, a look of pure thanks. Then, she and her baby flew together, up, up, up into the safety of their nest. Pip watched them go. He didn't have any more acorns than when he started, but his heart felt full. So full and warm. That quiet, happy feeling Pip had… that’s the feeling of kindness. It doesn't make a loud noise, and you don’t get a prize for it.
It's just a warm little glow that you get to keep inside. Helping someone, big or small, just because you can, is a special kind of magic. It’s like carrying a little piece of sunshine with you, wherever you go.
