A single, controlled exhale can slow your heart rate by up to fifteen beats per minute. In our last session, Admin, we worked on finding that grounding calm. Today, we give that calm a specific rhythm. It’s called the four-seven-eight breath.
A simple pattern that works directly on your nervous system. It’s a tool. Not a theory. And it works because it forces a change in your body’s state. So find a comfortable position. Seated is good, with your back supported. Or lying down. Whatever allows your body to feel held.
Allowing your hands to rest in your lap, or at your sides. The pattern is simple. We will breathe in through the nose for a count of four. We will hold that breath for a count of seven. And then we will exhale completely through the mouth, for a count of eight.
Making a gentle whooshing sound as the air leaves. The inhale is quiet. The hold is stillness. The exhale is the release. That long exhale is the key. It’s a direct signal to your body that you are safe. That you can stand down. Let’s prepare. Rest the tip of your tongue on the ridge of tissue just behind your upper front teeth.
You’ll keep it there for the entire exercise. Let all the air out of your lungs. A full, complete exhale. Now. Let’s begin. Close your eyes, if they aren't already. Breathe in through your nose… two… three… four. Hold the breath… two… three… four… five… six… seven.
Exhale through your mouth… two… three… four… five… six… seven… eight. That is one cycle. Let’s do another. Inhale… two… three… four. Hold… two… three… four… five… six… seven. Exhale… two… three… four… five… six… seven… eight. Again. On your own rhythm now.
I will guide the first part. Breathe in. Hold. And release. One more time. The deepest one yet. Inhale. Hold the quiet. And let it ALL go. Now just… return to your normal breathing. In and out through the nose. No effort. Simply notice. Notice the quiet that has settled in your body.
The space between your thoughts. The weight of your hands. This is not an accident. You created this shift. With your breath. With your attention. Four. Seven. Eight. That is the entire tool. It is yours now. Use it when the world gets loud. Use it before a difficult conversation.
Use it to find your way back to yourself. This calm is not something you found. It is something you made.
