The optimal breathing rate for a human at rest is about five point five breaths per minute. In our last session, we used the structure of box breathing to find focus. Today, we find that same calm not with corners, but with a circle. So let’s begin. Find a comfortable position.
Seated, with your spine tall. Or lying down, fully supported. Allow your eyes to gently close. Simply arrive. There is nothing to do. Nowhere to be. Just this breath, in this body, in this moment. Notice the natural rhythm of your breathing without trying to change it.
Feel the gentle rise and fall of your chest or your belly. The practice today is coherent breathing. It is a simple, continuous wave. A smooth inhale for a count of six. And a smooth exhale for a count of six. No pause at the top. No hold at the bottom. Just one fluid, circular motion.
Let’s begin together. Gently exhale all the air from your lungs. And now… inhale… two… three… four… five… six. Exhale… two… three… four… five… six. Inhale… smooth and easy… three… four… five… six. Exhale… letting go… three… four… five… six. Inhale… filling up gently… two… three… four… five… six.
Exhale… softening… two… three… four… five… six. Continue on your own. Finding a rhythm that feels like your own. The count is just a guide. The feeling is the goal. If your mind wanders, that’s okay. That’s what minds do. Simply notice where it went, and gently guide your attention back to the wave of the breath.
In for six. Out for six. Allowing the breath to be a continuous loop. The end of your exhale flows directly into the start of your next inhale. The peak of your inhale softens right into your next exhale. Like a tide, washing in and washing out. With each cycle, you are telling your nervous system that you are safe.
You are creating a state of balance. A coherence between your heart and your lungs. There is no effort here. No strain. Just allowing. Let’s take three more cycles together. Inhale… two… three… four… five… six. Exhale… two… three… four… five… six. Inhale… calm and steady… three… four… five… six.
Exhale… quiet and deep… three… four… five… six. Last one. Inhale… two… three… four… five… six. Exhale… two… three… four… five… six. Now, let the counting go. Allow your breath to return to its own natural rhythm. No control. Just notice. Notice the stillness.
The quiet space you’ve created inside. This state of equilibrium is always available to you. It is always just a few breaths away. Bring a little awareness back to your body. The feeling of the chair or the floor beneath you. The air on your skin. When you feel ready, you can gently open your eyes.
You carry this calm with you.
