Navy SEALs call it 'box breathing' to maintain focus under extreme pressure. Last time, we used the 4-7-8 technique to activate the body’s rest-and-digest response. Today, we build on that with a different kind of balance, a practice known as Sama Vritti, or Equal Breathing. So find your position.
A comfortable seat, with your spine naturally tall. Allowing the shoulders to drop away from the ears. Let your hands rest wherever they are comfortable. And when you’re ready, gently close your eyes, or soften your gaze toward the floor. Before we begin the count, just take a full, deep breath in through the nose.
And a long, slow sigh out through the mouth. Letting go of whatever came before this moment. Arriving right here. The pattern is simple. We will inhale for a count of four. Hold the breath at the top for a count of four. Exhale for a count of four. And hold the breath at the bottom, empty, for a count of four.
Four equal sides. A perfect square. Let’s begin together. Gently exhale all the air from your lungs. And now… Inhale, two, three, four. Hold at the top… two, three, four. Exhale slowly… two, three, four. Hold at the bottom… two, three, four. Again. Inhale… two, three, four. Hold… two, three, four.
Exhale… two, three, four. Hold… two, three, four. One more time with me. Breathe in… two, three, four. Gently hold… two, three, four. Breathe out… two, three, four. Gently hold… two, three, four. Now, continue on your own. Finding your own rhythm with that count. Inhaling for four. Holding for four.
Exhaling for four. Holding for four. The count is just an anchor. A place for your attention to rest. If your mind wanders, and it will, just gently guide it back to the count. Back to the feeling of the breath. Notice the transitions. The small pause between the in-breath and the hold.
The shift from holding to letting go. Keep it smooth. Effortless. If a count of four feels strained, adjust it. Try a count of three. The number is not the point. The equality IS. The balance is the practice. Just a few more rounds on your own. Letting the rhythm soothe your nervous system.
Creating a space of calm stillness inside. And now, after your next exhale… just let the count dissolve. Let your breath return to its own natural rhythm. No counting. No effort. Simply noticing. Feeling the effects of the practice. There is nothing else to do. Nowhere else to be. Simply rest in this awareness.
When you feel ready, slowly begin to bring your awareness back. Noticing the weight of your body in the chair. The temperature of the air on your skin. You can wiggle your fingers and toes. Take one final, easy breath in. And a full breath out. And when you are ready, you can gently open your eyes.
The balance you create inside is the balance you carry outside.
