Navy SEALs use a technique called Box Breathing to maintain calm and focus in life-or-death situations. In our last session, we focused on using your breath to find deep relaxation. Today, we give that calm a precise structure.
Find a comfortable seat. Or lie down. Whatever allows your body to feel supported. And when you feel ready, gently close your eyes. Just for a moment… do nothing. Simply arrive right here. Noticing the air as it is right now.
No need to change it. Just feeling the natural rhythm of your breath in your body. The practice today is simple. It’s a four-part breath. We will inhale for a count of four. Hold the breath gently at the top for a count of four.
Exhale completely for a count of four. And hold the breath out, empty, for a count of four. Inhale… hold… exhale… hold. Four equal sides. Like a box. This rhythm tells your nervous system that you are safe. It signals that you are in control.
This is a reset you can access anytime. Let’s begin the first round together. Gently exhale all the air from your lungs. Empty them completely. Now… inhale through the nose. Two. Three. Four. Hold the breath at the top. Two.
Three. Four. Exhale slowly through the mouth. Two. Three. Four. Hold the breath at the bottom. Empty. Two. Three. Four. That is one round. Let’s continue. Inhale. Two. Three. Four. Hold. Lightly. Two. Three. Four. Exhale. Let it go. Two. Three.
Four. Hold. Stillness. Two. Three. Four. Again. Breathe in. Two. Three. Four. Hold. Two. Three. Four. Breathe out. Two. Three. Four. Hold. Two. Three. Four. Now, continue on your own for a few moments. Keep the count silently in your mind.
Four… four… four… four. If your mind wanders, that’s okay. That’s what minds do. Just notice it without judgment. And gently guide your attention back to the count. Back to the shape of the breath. Inhaling calm. Holding presence.
Exhaling tension. Holding peace. Now, let the structure of the count dissolve. Allow your breath to return to its own natural rhythm. No effort. Just being. Bring some gentle awareness back into your body. Maybe a small movement in your fingers.
Or your toes. When you are ready, and only then… slowly allow your eyes to open. Take in the room around you. Notice how you feel. The small shift from just a few minutes ago. You did not find this calm. You built it.
