The 4-7-8 breath was designed by Dr. Andrew Weil as a natural tranquilizer for the nervous system. In our last session, we used the sharp corners of box breathing for focus. Today, we use the breath for a different purpose.
To let go. So find a comfortable position. Seated or lying down. Allow your eyes to drift closed. Or soften your gaze on a single point in front of you. Let your hands rest gently in your lap or by your sides. And just arrive here.
In this moment. Noticing the weight of your body. Supported by the chair or the floor. The technique is simple. We will inhale quietly through the nose for a count of four. We will hold the breath for a count of seven.
And we will exhale completely through the mouth, making a gentle whoosh sound, for a count of eight. Let’s begin by just letting all the air out of your lungs. A full, complete exhale. Now. Cycle one. Inhale through your nose.
Two. Three. Four. Hold the breath. Two. Three. Four. Five. Six. Seven. And exhale through your mouth with a whoosh. Two. Three. Four. Five. Six. Seven. Eight. That is one full breath. Let’s do another. Cycle two. Inhale quietly. Two.
Three. Four. And hold. Two. Three. Four. Five. Six. Seven. Exhale. Let it all go. Three. Four. Five. Six. Seven. Eight. Noticing the stillness at the bottom of the breath. Cycle three. Inhale. Two. Three. Four. Hold the breath. Gentle.
Three. Four. Five. Six. Seven. And release. Whoosh. Three. Four. Five. Six. Seven. Eight. Two more. You are doing this. Cycle four. Breathing in. Two. Three. Four. Holding. Two. Three. Four. Five. Six. Seven. Exhaling completely. Two. Three.
Four. Five. Six. Seven. Eight. Last one. Make it your fullest expression of release. Cycle five. Inhale. Two. Three. Four. Hold. Two. Three. Four. Five. Six. Seven. And let it ALL go. Two. Three. Four. Five. Six. Seven. Eight. Now just allow your breath to return to its natural rhythm.
No counting. No effort. Simply notice how you feel. The quiet in your body. The space in your mind. This calm is always available to you. Four. Seven. Eight. That’s the key. When you feel ready, gently bring some awareness back to your fingers and toes.
And slowly, open your eyes. You did the work. Now carry the quiet forward.
