Taking one deep belly breath directly stimulates your vagus nerve, telling your brain to slow your heart rate and lower your blood pressure, right now. In our last session, we used the structure of box breathing to find control. Today, we go deeper than the count. We go to the source. Find a comfortable position. Seated, or lying down. It doesn’t matter. Just be somewhere you can be still for a few minutes.
If you’re sitting, feel the weight of your body in the chair. The connection. If you’re lying down, feel the floor or the bed supporting you completely. Close your eyes if that feels right. Take one hand and place it on your chest, right over your heart. Take your other hand and place it on your belly, just above your navel. For a moment, just feel the contact. The warmth of your hands.
Don’t change your breath yet. Just notice it. Where is the movement? Is it in your chest? Your shoulders? Your belly? No judgment. Just awareness. Most of us live our lives breathing up here—in the chest. Short, shallow sips of air. It’s the body’s alarm system, constantly on low alert. We’re going to turn that alarm off. I want you to imagine the breath not starting in your nose or your throat, but deep in your belly.
Right under your hand. On your next inhale, gently push your belly out into your hand. Feel it rise. The hand on your chest should stay relatively still. Inhale through your nose… feel the belly expand. And now exhale… let the belly fall gently back toward your spine. That’s it. That’s the entire practice. Let’s do it again. Inhale, send the air down, inflating the belly like a balloon. Exhale, let it all go.
Your chest might still move a little. That’s fine. This isn't about getting it perfect. It’s about intention. Send the breath down. Inhale… belly rises. Exhale… belly falls. The hand on your chest is just a sensor. A reminder. Keep it quiet. Keep it still. All the action is happening below. Inhale… deep and slow. Exhale… a gentle release. Notice the pace. It’s not rushed. There’s no finish line.
Let’s try a few more. I’ll be quiet. Just you and your breath. The rise and fall of your belly. Keep going. Inhale… expand. Exhale… soften. Now, let your hands come to rest in your lap or by your sides. Let your breath return to its natural rhythm, without any effort. Just notice how you feel. The quiet. The space you’ve created. This state is always available to you. It’s one breath away. When you’re ready, you can gently open your eyes.
You just changed the chemistry of your body with your own intention. Carry that power with you.
