A single deep exhale can activate your vagus nerve, telling your entire body it is safe to relax. In our last session, we talked about finding your inner calm. Today, you are going to build it, breath by breath. So find a comfortable position. Seated is fine. Lying down is also fine. It doesn’t matter where. Just be here now. Let your hands rest in your lap or by your sides.

Close your eyes if that feels right for you. Bring your awareness to your body. Notice your shoulders. Let them drop away from your ears. Feel the tension in your jaw. And let it go. Let your tongue fall from the roof of your mouth. There is nothing for you to do right now. Nothing to solve. Just this breath. Today, we will use a simple, powerful pattern.

It’s called four-seven-eight breathing. You will inhale quietly through your nose to a count of four. You will hold that breath for a count of seven. Then you will exhale completely through your mouth, making a gentle whoosh sound, for a count of eight. The exhale takes twice as long as the inhale. That’s the key. That’s what sends the signal of calm through your entire nervous system.

Let’s try it together. First, let all the air out of your lungs. A full, complete exhale. Push it all out. Now, close your lips. Inhale through your nose. One… two… three… four. Hold the breath. One… two… three… four… five… six… seven. And exhale through your mouth with a whoosh. One… two… three… four… five… six… seven… eight. That was one round.

You’re doing it perfectly. Let’s do another. Inhale through your nose. One… two… three… four. Hold. Relax your shoulders. Two… three… four… five… six… seven. Exhale. Let it all go. Two… three… four… five… six… seven… eight. Again. Inhale quietly. One… two… three… four. Hold the breath. Feel the stillness inside. Two… three… four… five… six… seven.

Exhale completely. Let the day go. Two… three… four… five… six… seven… eight. One last time. This is your deepest one yet. Inhale. One… two… three… four. Hold. Seven… six… five… four… three… two… one. Exhale. Eight… seven… six… five… four… three… two… one. Now, just let your breath return to its natural rhythm. No counting. No effort. Just notice.

Notice the quiet. The space you’ve created. This wasn’t here five minutes ago. You made this. This tool is yours now. You can use it anywhere. Before a difficult conversation. In the middle of a stressful day. Lying in bed when your mind won’t stop racing. Four. Seven. Eight. Take one more easy breath in. And as you let it go, gently bring your awareness back to the space around you.

You carry the calm with you.
