A single deep diaphragmatic breath can lower your heart rate by up to five beats per minute. Instantly. In our last session, we found our reset point through simple, intentional breathing. Today, we go to the source. We find the engine that drives that calm. So find a comfortable position. Seated in a chair, or lying on your back. Whatever lets your body feel supported. Close your eyes if that feels right for you. And just begin by noticing. Noticing your breath as it is right now.

No need to change a thing. Simply observe the natural rhythm of your inhale… and your exhale. Now, place one hand on your upper chest. And place your other hand on your belly, just over your navel. For the next minute, this is your focus. The goal is simple. We want the bottom hand to move. The top hand… we want it to stay still. Most of us spend our days breathing into our chest. Short, shallow sips of air. Anxious breathing. We’re going to change that. So, take a slow, deep breath in through your nose.

And as you do, intentionally push your stomach out. Feel it expand into your hand. Feel that bottom hand rise. Hold it for just a moment. And now, exhale slowly through your mouth. Feel your belly fall back toward your spine. Feel your hand lower. That’s it. That’s the entire practice. Let’s do it again. A slow inhale through the nose… belly expands, hand rises. Your chest stays quiet. And a long, slow exhale… letting it all go. If your chest is still trying to do all the work, that’s okay.

That’s a lifetime of habit. Don’t fight it. Just gently guide your awareness… guide your intention… back down to your belly. Inhale… fill the space. Exhale… empty it out. Now, let go of the counting. Let go of the intense focus. Just continue this pattern. Deep, slow, belly breaths. As you breathe in, you’re not just taking in air. Your diaphragm, that big muscle under your lungs, is contracting and moving downward. It is physically connected to your vagus nerve—the superhighway of your body's relaxation response.

When you breathe this way… you are sending a direct, physical signal up that nerve, straight to your brain. The signal says: you are safe. It's not a thought. It's not a wish. It’s a command. You are pulling the lever that downshifts your entire nervous system from fight-or-flight… into rest-and-digest. You are telling your body it's okay to stand down. Take one more deep belly breath. The deepest one yet. In through the nose. And then a full, complete exhale. A gentle .

Let your hands rest in your lap, or by your sides. Let your breath return to its own natural rhythm. Notice how you feel. The shift. The quiet. This tool is always with you. This is not a theory you read in a book. You just did it. You felt it work. Your breath is your anchor. Today, you learned how to set it.
