One single minute of deep, diaphragmatic breathing can begin to lower cortisol levels in your bloodstream. That’s the science. Now let's make it real. Find a position where you can be undisturbed for the next few minutes. Seated in a chair, with your feet flat on the floor. Or lying on your back. Whatever lets your body feel supported. Close your eyes if that feels right for you. Bring your attention to your breath, just as it is.

Don't change anything yet. Simply notice. Notice the air coming in. And going out. Now, place one hand on your chest, and the other on your belly, right over your navel. Take a normal breath. Feel which hand moves more. For most of us, under most conditions, it’s the top hand. The one on the chest. This is shallow breathing. The body’s natural response to being on alert. We’re going to change the pattern. We’re going to send the breath lower, into the belly.

This is the signal for your nervous system to stand down. Keeping your hands where they are, gently breathe all your air out. All of it. Until you feel empty. Now, through your nose, take a slow, deep breath in. And as you do, your only job is to make the bottom hand rise. Send the air down. Feel your belly expand like a balloon, lifting your hand. The top hand on your chest should barely move. At the top of the breath, hold for just a moment.

And now, a long, slow exhale. Through your mouth, as if you’re breathing through a straw. Feel your belly fall. Feel the bottom hand sink back down. Exhale completely. Let’s do that again. In through the nose. Belly expands. Bottom hand rises. Hold. Out through the mouth. Slow. Controlled. Belly falls. Let the tension go with it. Again. Inhale. Your belly, not your chest. Exhale. Longer than the inhale. A full release.

Now, a few cycles on your own. I’ll be quiet. Your only focus is the gentle rise and fall of your lower hand. Nothing else matters for this moment. Inhale, the hand rises. Exhale, it falls. If your mind wanders, it will. That’s fine. Don’t fight it. Just notice it, and then gently guide your focus back to the feeling of your hand rising... and falling. One more together. The deepest breath you’ve taken all day.

Inhale through the nose... feel the belly swell. And a complete exhale. Let it all go. You can let your hands rest now. Return to your normal rhythm of breathing. Notice how you feel. The shift. It might be subtle. It might be significant. But it's there. You did that. You didn't find calm. You created it. This tool is always with you. Your breath. When you’re ready, you can open your eyes.
