Breathing through your left nostril activates the right hemisphere of your brain. The side tied to rest, creativity, and intuition. Breathing through your right nostril does the opposite — it activates the left hemisphere, the side of logic and planning. Most of the day, you're dominant in one or the other. The work now is to bring them into harmony.
This is a direct line into your nervous system. A way to regulate what feels chaotic. A way to find your center when the world pulls you away from it. So let’s begin. Find a comfortable, tall seat. Spine straight, shoulders soft. Let your hands rest in your lap for a moment. Close your eyes. Just feel your breath as it is. No need to change it yet. Notice the air entering your body...
and leaving it. Now, bring your right hand up toward your face. Fold your index finger and your middle finger down, so they press gently into your palm. You’ll use your thumb and your ring finger. This is the only tool you need. Gently press your right thumb against your right nostril, closing it completely. And now... inhale slowly through your left nostril.
Fill your lungs. One... two... three... four. At the top of the breath, close your left nostril with your ring finger, and release your thumb from the right. Exhale slowly through your right nostril. Four... three... two... one. All the air out. Now, inhale through that same right nostril. A slow, steady breath. One... two... three... four. Close the right nostril with your thumb...
release the left. Exhale through your left nostril. Four... three... two... one. That is one complete round. We will continue. No rush. Close the right. Inhale left. One... two... three... four. Close the left. Exhale right. One... two... three... four. Inhale right. One... two... three... four. Close the right. Exhale left. One... two... three... four. That’s two rounds. Your own pace now.
I will guide. Inhale left. Exhale right. Inhale right. Exhale left. Keep going. Feel the air as a current, flowing up one side... and down the other. A gentle tide inside your own body. Harmonizing. Balancing. Let’s do one more full round together. Finish the exhale you are on. Now. Inhale left. Slow and deep. Close. Exhale completely through the right. Inhale right.
Fill all the way up. Close. And a long, slow, complete exhale through the left. When you're done... release your hand back down to your lap. Keep your eyes closed. Both nostrils are open now. Breathe normally. And just notice. Notice the quiet. The stillness between your thoughts. Notice the quality of the air as it enters your body. It might feel smoother.
Cooler. More spacious. This is what balance feels like. Not an idea. Not a theory. A physical sensation. You created it. With your own breath. The energy is not out there. It’s right here. The balance you feel now is always available. You just have to remember to breathe.
