Find a comfortable position. Seated or lying down. It doesn't matter where. Now, place one hand on your chest, right over your heart. And place your other hand on your belly, just above your navel. Close your eyes if that feels right for you. For a moment, do nothing. Don't change your breath. Just feel the movement under your hands as you breathe in… and as you breathe out. Notice which hand moves more. No judgment. Just information.
For most of us, most of the day, the top hand does all the work. We breathe into our chest. Shallow. Quick. A survival breath. We're going to invite the breath deeper. Keeping your attention on your hands, I want you to take a slow, gentle breath in through your nose. And as you do, imagine you are sending that breath all the way down to the hand on your belly. Feel your belly expand into your hand. Like a balloon, softly inflating.
The hand on your chest should stay relatively still. And now, a long, slow exhale through your mouth. Feel the hand on your belly fall as your navel draws back toward your spine. Let's do that again. Inhale through the nose… feel the belly rise. The chest stays quiet. Exhale through the mouth… feel the belly contract. Good. Again. Inhale… belly fills with air. One… two… three. Hold for a moment at the top. And exhale… letting it all go.
Four… three… two… one. This is diaphragmatic breathing. This is your body’s natural state of rest. You’re not learning something new. You are remembering. Let’s continue. Inhale, belly expands. Feel the cool air coming in. Exhale, belly contracts. Feel the tension leaving your body with the warm air. Your shoulders might want to help. Let them drop. Your jaw might be tight. Let it go soft. The only work to be done is right here. Under the hand on your belly.
Inhale… expand. Exhale… release. If your mind wanders—and it will—that's okay. That's what minds do. When you notice it has drifted, gently… without force… guide your attention back to the feeling of your hand rising and falling. This practice is not about emptying the mind. It’s about giving your mind one simple, calming thing to focus on. The rise… and the fall. Now, for the next few breaths, I’ll be quiet. You have the rhythm.
Stay with it. Inhale… belly rises. Exhale… belly falls. One more, together. Deepest breath you’ve taken all day. Inhale through the nose, fill the belly completely. Feel it press firmly into your hand. Hold it. And now, a full release. Let it all go. Let your breathing return to its natural rhythm. You can let your hands rest in your lap, or at your sides. Notice how you feel. Notice the quiet. The space you’ve created is real. It’s inside you.
You can return to it anytime you need to. All it takes is a breath. When you're ready, slowly begin to bring some awareness back to the room. Maybe wiggle your fingers and toes. Gently open your eyes. You did the work. Carry this stillness with you.
