Breathing at a rate of about six breaths per minute can measurably calm your nervous system in under sixty seconds. That near-instant shift is the reason we practice the intentional guidance we explored in our last session. Today, we find that rhythm. So first. Find your posture.
Seated, with your spine tall but not rigid. Or lying down, feeling the support of the surface beneath you. Allow your eyes to close. And just notice the breath that's already here. No need to change it yet. Simply observe its natural rhythm. The gentle rise and fall of your chest or belly.
Feeling the weight of your body. The points of contact. Your feet on the floor. Your hands resting in your lap. Bringing all of your awareness right here. To this moment. Now, we'll begin to shape the breath. We're moving toward a simple, balanced rhythm. An inhale for a count of five.
And an exhale for a count of five. Let all the air go. A full, easy exhale. And now. Inhale… two… three… four… five. Exhale… two… three… four… five. Inhale… two… three… four… five. Exhale… two… three… four… five. Again. A slow, steady inhale. And a smooth, complete exhale.
Now, let the numbers fade into the background. Find the rhythm that feels right for YOU. It might be a little faster. A little slower. The goal is not the count. The goal is the balance. The feeling of one breath flowing seamlessly into the next. No pause at the top of the inhale.
No holding at the bottom of the exhale. Just a continuous, gentle loop. Inhaling… calm. Exhaling… tension. Your nervous system is responding to this rhythm. Finding its equilibrium. Moving from fight-or-flight into a state of rest. Of safety. Each breath is an anchor. If the mind wanders, that's okay.
That's what minds do. Gently guide your attention back. Back to the feeling of the breath moving in… and moving out. Just this. For a few more moments. This simple, powerful rhythm. Noticing the stillness that grows in the space between thoughts. The quiet that settles in your body.
Now, gently release control of the breath. Let the counting dissolve completely. Allow your body to breathe for you. Just as it knows how. Notice what has shifted. Is there more space in your chest? A softness in your shoulders? A quiet in your mind? Whatever you feel… is what's here.
Simply be with it. When you're ready, you can slowly begin to bring some gentle movement back to your fingers and toes. Maybe a soft stretch. Opening your eyes only when it feels right. This state of balance is not something you have to find. It is something you can create.
You have access to this calm, any time you need it.
