Navy SEALs use a technique called Box Breathing to stay calm and focused under extreme pressure. In our last daily reset, we found a moment of stillness. Today, we give that stillness a structure.
A container. This technique brings your nervous system into balance in just a few minutes. It works by creating a steady, predictable rhythm. It tells your body that you are safe.
That you are in control. So find a comfortable position. Seated, with your spine tall but not rigid. Or lying down. Whatever allows you to be alert, and at ease.
Close your eyes, or soften your gaze. Just begin by noticing your breath as it is right now. No need to change it. Simply observe. The air entering. The air leaving.
The technique is simple. We will build a box with our breath. An equal-sided square. You will breathe in for a count of four. Hold your breath at the top for a count of four.
Breathe out for a count of four. And hold the breath at the bottom for a count of four. Smooth transitions. No forcing. No strain. Let’s begin together. First, gently exhale all the air from your lungs.
Get empty. Now. Breathe in… two… three… four. Hold the breath… two… three… four. Breathe out… two… three… four. Hold the breath… two… three… four. Again. Inhale… two… three… four.
Hold… two… three… four. Exhale… two… three… four. Hold… two… three… four. Find the rhythm. Your own pace. In… two… three… four. Hold… two… three… four. Out… two… three… four.
Hold… two… three… four. Let your body soften into the pattern. Inhale… two… three… four. Hold… two… three… four. Exhale… two… three… four. Hold… two… three… four.
Continue on your own now. I will keep the time. Inhale. Hold. Exhale. Hold. One more round like this. In your own quiet count. Inhale. Hold. Exhale. Hold. Now… let the pattern go.
Allow your breath to return to its natural rhythm. Effortless. Notice the shift. The quiet space you’ve created. The stillness inside the structure. This calm is not something you found.
It is something you BUILT. And you can build it again, anytime you need it. Four counts in. Four counts out. Bring a little movement back to your fingers and toes.
When you are ready, gently open your eyes. You have your breath. You have your center. Carry this quiet with you.
