A 2013 study found that just five minutes of alternate nostril breathing can measurably lower your resting heart rate. Last time, we used the structured rhythm of box breathing to find our center. Today, we'll use a different kind of rhythm to create balance between the two sides of your body, and your mind.
This is Nadi Shodhana. It means clearing the channels. Let's begin. Find a comfortable seat. Spine tall, but not stiff. Shoulders soft, away from your ears. Allowing your hands to rest gently in your lap. Close your eyes if you feel comfortable.
And just for a moment… simply arrive. Noticing the air on your skin. Noticing the support of the chair or the floor beneath you. Now, bring your right hand up toward your face. You can gently fold down your index finger and middle finger toward your palm.
We will use the thumb and the ring finger. If this is uncomfortable, just use your thumb and any other finger. There is no perfect way to do this. Just the way that works for you. Rest your right thumb gently on your right nostril. Take a full, deep breath in through both nostrils… and a full, long breath out through both.
Now, gently close the right nostril with your thumb. And breathe in… slowly… through your left nostril. One… two… three… four. At the top of the breath, close the left nostril with your ring finger, and release your thumb. Breathe out… slowly… through the right nostril.
One… two… three… four. Now, breathe IN through the right nostril. Slow and steady. One… two… three… four. Close the right nostril with your thumb, release the left. And breathe OUT through the left nostril. One… two… three… four. That is one round.
We will continue. Breathe in, left. Close and hold. Breathe out, right. Breathe in, right. Close and hold. Breathe out, left. Continue on your own now. Finding your own gentle rhythm. No need to rush. No need to force. In, left. Out, right. In, right.
Out, left. Just allowing the breath to flow. A gentle current moving from one side to the other. Harmonizing. Balancing. Now, finish the cycle you are on. Completing your next exhale through the left nostril. When you are finished, gently release your hand.
Place it back in your lap. Keep your eyes closed for a moment longer. Breathing naturally now, through both nostrils. And just… notice. Notice the quiet. Notice the space you have created. A feeling of balance. Of wholeness. You carry this balance with you.
It is always one breath away.
