A single deep breath, sent low into your belly, can begin to activate your vagus nerve in less than three seconds. That nerve is the main brake on your body's fight-or-flight response. You have direct access to it. Right now. Let’s find it. Find a comfortable position. Seated in a chair, with your feet flat on the floor. Or lying down on your back. Whatever lets your body feel supported. Close your eyes if that feels right.

Or soften your gaze on a point in front of you. Just for a moment, notice your breath as it is. No need to change it. Just observe. Where do you feel it most? In your chest? Your throat? Your nose? There is no right answer. Just awareness. Now, take one hand and place it on your chest, right over your heart. Take your other hand and place it on your belly, just above your navel. These are your guides. Your feedback. For the next few minutes, your only job is to breathe in a way that moves the bottom hand.

The hand on your belly. The hand on your chest… should stay mostly still. Let’s try. Take a slow breath in through your nose. And as you do, consciously send that breath down, past your chest, and into your belly. Feel your stomach expand into your hand. The hand on your belly should rise. Now, a long, slow exhale through your mouth. Feel your belly fall. Feel the hand sink gently back toward your spine. That’s it. That’s the entire practice.

Let’s do it again. Slowly in through the nose… into the belly. Feel the hand rise. One… two… three… four. Hold it at the top. Just for a moment. And a slow, controlled exhale. Feel the hand fall. One… two… three… four… five… six. The chest stays quiet. The belly does the work. Again. Inhale. Send the air down. Feel the diaphragm engage, pushing your stomach out. Exhale. A full release. Let the tension leave with the breath. Many of us spend our days breathing only into the top third of our lungs.

Shallow. Anxious. It’s a habit learned from stress. This is the antidote. Breathing into the hand on your belly. Let’s do three more rounds together. In your own time. I will be quiet. Just you and your breath. Focus on the feeling of that bottom hand rising… and falling. Good. One last one. Make it your deepest, slowest breath yet. Inhale… fill the lowest part of your lungs completely. And exhale. Let it all go. You can let your breathing return to its natural rhythm now.

Keep your hands where they are for another moment. Notice the difference. Notice the quiet. The stillness you’ve created. This isn’t a special state you have to find. This stillness is always here. You just have to breathe your way back to it.
