Stimulating your vagus nerve for just two minutes can shift your entire nervous system out of fight-or-flight. Yesterday we talked about finding calm. Today, we’re going to build it. With your own breath. Find a place to sit. Or lie down. It doesn’t matter where. Just be somewhere you can be still for the next few minutes. Get comfortable. Let your shoulders drop away from your ears.
Unclench your jaw. If it feels right for you, gently close your eyes. Place one hand on your chest, and the other on your belly, just below your ribcage. We’re going to start with one normal breath. In through your nose... and out through your mouth. Good. Now, for the next few minutes, we’re going to breathe into the belly. The hand on your chest should stay mostly still. The hand on your belly is the one that’s going to move.
This is where the work happens. Let all the air out. All of it. Now, a slow breath in through your nose for a count of four. Feel your belly expand like a balloon, pushing your hand up and out. One… two… three… four… Hold it right there at the top. Just for a moment. One… two… Now, a long, slow exhale through your mouth. Longer than the inhale. Feel your belly fall as you gently release the air.
One… two… three… four… five… six… Your hand lowers. That’s one. We’ll do it again. Inhale through the nose. Belly rises. One… two… three… four… Hold. Feel the fullness. One… two… Exhale through the mouth. Belly falls. Let it all go. One… two… three… four… five… six… Keep this rhythm. In for four… hold for two… out for six. Notice the air. Cool as it comes in through your nose. Warmer as it leaves your mouth.
With each long exhale, let something go. The tension you’re holding in your forehead. Let it go. The tightness in your shoulders. Let it go. The list of things you need to do next. Let it go. Just for now. It can wait. I’ll be quiet for a few rounds. Just you and the rhythm. Inhale… belly rises. Exhale… belly falls. Again. Your own pace. Feeling the rise… and the fall. Now… let your breathing return to its natural rhythm.
No counting. No effort. Just let your body breathe itself. Leave your hands where they are. Notice the gentle, automatic movement. How do you feel? Different than a few minutes ago? Quieter? Heavier? Lighter? There’s no right answer. Just notice what is. This is the reset. This is the recharge. You just did it. You didn’t need anything but yourself. This quiet space is always here for you.
This breath. You built it. You can come back anytime you need to. When you’re ready… slowly, gently… open your eyes. Take one more deep breath in. And carry this stillness with you.
