Stimulating your vagus nerve for just sixty seconds can shift your entire nervous system out of fight-or-flight. Yesterday we talked about finding the reset button. This is it. So let’s begin. Find a comfortable position. Seated is good. Spine straight, but not rigid. Let your shoulders drop away from your ears. Close your eyes, or just lower your gaze to a soft focus on the floor in front of you. Just start by noticing your breath.
No need to change it. Just feel the air as it enters your body… and as it leaves. Today we’re going to practice what’s called Sama Vritti. Equal Breathing. It’s simple. We’ll create a box with our breath. Inhale for four counts. Hold for four. Exhale for four. And hold at the bottom for four. The goal isn't perfection. The goal is rhythm. So let’s start. Gently exhale all the air from your lungs. And now. Inhale… two… three… four.
Hold the breath… two… three… four. Exhale, slow and steady… two… three… four. Hold the empty space… two… three… four. Again. Inhale… two… three… four. Hold… two… three… four. feel the stillness. Exhale… two… three… four. Hold… two… three… four. Keep this rhythm. I’ll count with you for one more round. Inhale… two… three… four. Hold… two… three… four. Exhale… two… three… four. Hold… two… three… four. Now, continue on your own.
I’ll stay here with you. Just the four-part count in your head. If your mind wanders… it will. That’s what minds do. Don’t fight it. Just notice it, and gently guide your attention back to the count. Back to the feeling of the breath. Inhale. Hold. Exhale. Hold. Your body knows this rhythm. You’re just reminding it. Try to smooth out the corners of the box. Make the transition from inhale to hold… from exhale to empty… seamless.
A slow, steady, continuous loop. Most people at this point try too hard. They force the breath. Don’t force it. Let it be easy. Let the count guide the breath, not command it. Let's do two more full cycles together. Inhale… feel your chest expand. Hold… a moment of perfect balance. Exhale… release everything. Hold… in the quiet space. Last one. Make it your best one. Inhale… slow… deep. Hold… Exhale… even slower. Hold… And now… let it all go.
Let the count dissolve. Let your breath return to its own natural rhythm. No effort. Just being. Notice the shift. The quiet inside. The space you just created for yourself. Bring your awareness back to your body. Feel the weight of your hands in your lap. The contact of your feet on the floor. Gently, when you’re ready, you can open your eyes. Bring the stillness with you. That balance is always there. You just have to remember the path back.
