The 4-7-8 breathing technique can lower your heart rate by twenty beats per minute… in less than sixty seconds. This isn't a theory. It's a physiological reset switch. One you are about to learn how to use. This is your daily reset. A moment to clear the slate and recharge. Today, we go deep into relaxation with a tool that works every time.
Find a comfortable seat. Back straight, but not stiff. Feet flat on the floor. Rest your hands in your lap. Let your eyes drift closed, or soften your gaze toward the floor. The technique is simple. But it requires your full attention. You will place the tip of your tongue on the ridge of tissue just behind your upper front teeth.
It will stay there for the entire exercise. You will inhale quietly through your nose. And you will exhale audibly through your mouth, around your tongue. If you hear a gentle whooshing sound, you're doing it right. Let's begin. First, let all the air out of your lungs. A full, complete exhale through your mouth.
Push it all out. Now. Close your mouth. Inhale quietly through your nose to a count of four. One… two… three… four. Hold your breath for a count of seven. One… two… three… four… five… six… seven. And exhale completely through your mouth for a count of eight. One… two… three… four… five… six… seven… eight. That was one cycle.
We will do six more. Again. Inhale through your nose… two… three… four. Hold the breath… two… three… four… five… six… seven. Exhale through your mouth… two… three… four… five… six… seven… eight. Let your shoulders drop. Inhale… two… three… four. Hold… two… three… four… five… six… seven. Exhale… two… three… four… five… six… seven… eight.
Feel the tension leaving your jaw. Inhale… two… three… four. Hold… two… three… four… five… six… seven. Exhale… two… three… four… five… six… seven… eight. Three more. You are doing the work. Inhale… two… three… four. Hold… two… three… four… five… six… seven. Exhale… two… three… four… five… six… seven… eight.
Let your body feel heavy in the chair. Inhale… two… three… four. Hold… two… three… four… five… six… seven. Exhale… two… three… four… five… six… seven… eight. Last one. Make it your deepest. Inhale… two… three… four. Hold… two… three… four… five… six… seven. Exhale… two… three… four… five… six… seven… eight.
Now, let your breath return to normal. Breathe naturally, without effort. Keep your eyes closed. Notice. Notice the quiet. The stillness. The space you just created inside your own body. This state is not an accident. You brought yourself here. This quiet is always available to you. Four counts in. Seven counts held.
Eight counts out. When you're ready, slowly bring some awareness back to your fingers and toes. Gently open your eyes. Carry this stillness with you.
