Your vagus nerve runs from your brainstem down into your abdomen. When you control your breath, you control that nerve. You are telling your body, directly, that it is safe. That it can stand down. This is not a metaphor. It’s physiology. This is how you manually initiate a reset. So let’s do that now. Find a comfortable seat. Or lie down. Whatever lets your body feel supported.
Let your hands rest in your lap or at your sides. Close your eyes if that feels right for you. First, just arrive. Feel the weight of your body on the chair or the floor. Notice the points of contact. Notice the air on your skin. Let your shoulders drop away from your ears. Unclench your jaw. Let your tongue fall from the roof of your mouth. Now, bring your attention to your breath.
Don’t change it yet. Just notice it. The gentle rise and fall of your chest. The air moving in through your nose… and out again. There’s no right or wrong way to be breathing. Just notice what’s here. We are going to move into a structured pattern called Box Breathing. It’s simple. You’ll inhale for a count of four. Hold your breath for a count of four. Exhale for a count of four.
And hold the breath out for a count of four. Four equal sides. A perfect box. This rhythm is ancient. It balances your nervous system. It creates a state of calm alertness. Let’s begin together. First, a gentle exhale to empty your lungs. Now… inhale through your nose… two… three… four. Hold the breath at the top… two… three… four. Exhale through your mouth… two… three… four.
Hold the breath at the bottom… two… three… four. Again. Inhale… two… three… four. Hold… still and quiet… two… three… four. Exhale… letting it all go… two… three… four. Hold… empty and calm… two… three… four. Continue this rhythm on your own. I will keep time with you. In for four. Hold for four. Out for four. Hold for four. As you breathe, your mind will wander. That is what minds do.
It’s not a mistake. When you notice it has drifted… gently guide it back. Back to the count. Back to the feeling of air filling your lungs. Inhale… feel your belly expand. Hold… notice the stillness. Exhale… feel your shoulders soften. Hold… rest in the quiet. This four-second pause is where the work happens. In that hold, you are teaching your body it can be calm even under pressure.
Even when things are uncomfortable. You are building resilience with every breath. Let’s do a few more rounds together. Inhale… two… three… four. Hold… two… three… four. Exhale… two… three… four. Hold… two… three… four. One more. Inhale. Hold. Exhale. Hold. Now… release the pattern. Let go of the count. Allow your breath to return to its own natural rhythm. No effort. No control. Just be here for a moment.
In the space you’ve created. Notice how you feel. Notice the shift. The quiet inside. The stillness. This was always here. You just needed to clear the path. When you’re ready, you can begin to bring some gentle movement back to your body. Wiggle your fingers and your toes. Slowly open your eyes, letting the light back in. The calm is here. You just had to breathe your way back to it.
