One deep, intentional breath can begin to shift your nervous system from fight-or-flight to rest-and-digest in under ninety seconds. This builds on everything we've practiced about noticing what’s happening inside your own body. So let’s begin. Find a comfortable position. Seated in a chair, with your feet flat on the floor. Or lying on your back, if that feels better for you today. Allow your eyes to gently close. Take a moment to arrive.
Notice the points of contact between your body and the surface supporting you. The weight of your hands in your lap. The air on your skin. Now, place one hand on your upper chest… and the other on your belly, just above your navel. For a few moments, don’t change a thing. Just notice your breath as it is. Feel the gentle, natural rise and fall under your hands. No judgment. Just awareness. Now we’ll begin to deepen the breath.
Take a slow, quiet inhale through your nose. And as you do, focus on sending the breath down into your belly. Feel the hand on your stomach rise… while the hand on your chest stays relatively still. Then, a long, slow exhale through your mouth. Gently letting the air go. Feeling your belly fall back toward your spine. Let’s do that again. A slow inhale through the nose… filling the belly. One… two… three… four. And a slow exhale through the mouth… emptying completely.
One… two… three… four… five… six. Inhale through the nose… belly expands. Exhale through the mouth… belly softens. The work is right here. Feeling the muscle below your lungs—your diaphragm—do its job. It drops down on the inhale, pushing your belly out. It lifts up on the exhale, drawing your belly in. This single movement is sending a powerful signal of safety up your vagus nerve… directly to your brain. A signal that says you are safe.
A signal that says you can let go. Let’s stay with this for a few more rounds. Inhale… for four. Exhale… for six. Feel the rhythm. Slow. Deep. Intentional. You are deliberately calming your own system. Take two more breaths just like that. In your own time. Now… let the count go. Let your controlled breath go. Allow your hands to rest back in your lap, or by your sides. Let your breath return to its natural, easy rhythm. And just notice.
Notice the quiet. The stillness. The space you’ve created in your own body and mind. This isn't magic. It's mechanics. You just reset your own system. This tool is always here.
