A single deep diaphragmatic breath stimulates the vagus nerve, signaling your brain to lower your heart rate in under three seconds. In our last session, we found a rhythm for a daily reset. Today, we go to the source of that calm. We find the mechanism that makes it all work. This is not about theory.
This is about what your body already knows how to do. You’re here to do something difficult. To be still. To be quiet. To intentionally shift the state of your own nervous system. So let’s begin. Find a comfortable position. This can be lying on your back, knees bent or legs extended. Or sitting upright in a chair, with your feet flat on the floor.
Whatever feels most supportive right now. Now, place one hand on your upper chest. And the other hand on your abdomen, just above your navel. Allow your eyes to gently close, if that feels right for you. For a moment, just breathe normally. Don’t change anything. Simply notice. Notice the movement under your hands.
The subtle rise and fall. Now, we begin to shift the breath. On your next inhale, I want you to guide the air down, deep into your belly. Feel the hand on your abdomen rise, expanding outward like a balloon. The hand on your chest should remain relatively still. It might move a little. That’s okay. The focus is the belly.
And as you exhale… let the air release slowly, completely. Feel your abdomen gently fall back toward your spine. Let’s try that again. A slow, smooth inhale through the nose… filling the belly. One… two… three… four. Feel it expand. And a long, relaxed exhale… letting it all go. One… two… three… four… five… six.
Releasing. Inhale deep into the belly. Exhale and soften. With each out-breath, you are giving your body permission to let go. Releasing tension you might be holding in your jaw. In your shoulders. In your hands. Continue this rhythm on your own. A deep inhale that expands the abdomen. A complete exhale that allows it to soften.
There is nowhere else to be. Nothing else to do. Just this breath. Right here. Right now. Noticing the gentle rise. And the easy fall. If your mind wanders, that’s normal. Simply notice where it went… and gently guide your attention back. Back to the feeling of your hand on your belly. Inhale. Exhale. You are in control.
You are creating this calm, one breath at a time. Now, let go of controlling the breath. Allow your breathing to return to its own natural rhythm. Keep your hands where they are for another moment. Just notice. Notice the quiet. The stillness. When you feel ready, slowly begin to bring your awareness back.
Wiggle your fingers and your toes. Gently notice the feeling of the surface beneath you. The temperature of the air on your skin. And when you are ready, slowly… gently… open your eyes. This quiet is yours to keep.
