Activating your vagus nerve through deep breathing can shift your body from fight-or-flight to rest-and-digest in less than ninety seconds. In our last session, we found the reset that comes from intentional breathing. Today, we go deeper.
We target the physical mechanism that makes that reset so powerful. Find a comfortable position. Lying on your back is ideal for this, but sitting tall in a chair also works. If you’re sitting, feel your feet flat on the floor. If you’re lying down, let your legs be heavy.
Allow your eyes to gently close. Take one hand and place it on your upper chest. Take your other hand and place it on your belly, just below your rib cage. For a moment, just breathe normally. Don't change anything. Simply notice. Notice the movement under your hands.
Which hand moves more? The one on your chest… or the one on your belly? There is no right answer. Just awareness. Most of us, when we’re stressed or busy, breathe into our chest. It’s a shallow, inefficient pattern. We’re going to change that.
The goal is to keep the hand on your chest relatively still. The real work… the deep work… happens under the hand on your belly. This is where your diaphragm is. A large, dome-shaped muscle at the base of your lungs. When you breathe with it, you breathe fully.
Now, let’s begin the practice. Gently exhale all the air from your lungs. Get it all out. Feel your belly fall toward your spine. Now, a slow, deep breath IN through your nose for a count of four. One… two… three… four. Feel your belly expand like a balloon, pushing your hand upward.
The chest stays quiet. Hold the breath at the top for just a moment. And now, a long, slow exhale through your mouth for a count of six. One… two… three… four… five… six. Feel your belly gently fall. Feel the tension leaving with the breath. Let’s do that again.
Inhale through the nose. Two. Three. Four. Belly rises. Hold. Exhale through the mouth. Two. Three. Four. Five. Six. Belly falls. Releasing completely. One more time, together. Inhale… slow and deep. Feel the stomach PRESS into your hand. This is the diaphragm at work.
Pause at the peak. And a full, gentle exhale. Let it ALL go. Now… continue on your own for a few rounds. Same rhythm. In for four. Out for six. I will be quiet with you. Let your breathing return to its natural rhythm now. Hands can rest by your sides.
Just notice how you feel. The quiet in your body. The stillness in your mind. This is not a temporary state you borrow. It’s a place inside you. You just built the path back to it. The calm you just created is always here. You just have to breathe your way home.
