Taking just one deep, diaphragmatic breath can send a direct signal to your brain to slow your heart rate. In our last session, we focused on using the breath as a reset button. Today, we go deeper into the specific mechanics of creating that calm. Find a comfortable position. Seated or lying down.

It doesn’t matter. What matters is that your spine is long and your body feels supported. Now. Place one hand on your chest. And the other on your belly, just above your navel. For a moment, just breathe as you normally would. Don’t change anything. Simply notice. Notice which hand is moving more.

The hand on your chest? Or the hand on your belly? There is no right or wrong here. Just information. Now, we’ll begin to shift the breath. Gently close your eyes if that feels right for you. Take a slow, quiet breath in through your nose. And as you do, send that breath down into your belly.

Feel the hand on your belly rise, expanding outward like a small balloon. The hand on your chest… it should remain almost perfectly still. And now, a long, slow exhale. Feel the hand on your belly fall as your navel draws back toward your spine. Let’s try that again. A slow inhale through the nose, filling the belly.

One… two… three… four. And a slow exhale, letting it all go. One… two… three… four… five… six. Inhale, the belly expands. The chest is quiet. Exhale, the belly softens and falls. Continue this rhythm on your own. Inhaling to a count that feels comfortable. Exhaling for just a little bit longer.

Noticing the space between the breaths. That small moment of stillness. As you breathe, bring your awareness to your shoulders. Are they creeping up toward your ears? On your next exhale, allow them to drop. Let them feel heavy. Bring your awareness to your jaw. Is it clenched? Allow a tiny space to form between your back teeth.

Soften the muscles around your mouth. Just breathing. Inhale, belly rises. Exhale, belly falls. Simple. Intentional. You are in control. You are guiding your own nervous system back to its baseline. Let’s take three more breaths like this. Making them the slowest, most deliberate breaths of your day.

One. Two. Three. Now, let your breath return to its natural rhythm. Let your hands rest in your lap. Just notice how you feel. What you just did was not simply relaxing. It was a direct intervention. Most of us, especially when stressed, breathe from our chest. Shallow, quick breaths that tell our body there’s a threat.

That’s the fight-or-flight system. When you intentionally engage your diaphragm—that large muscle at the base of your lungs—you are physically activating the opposite system. The parasympathetic nervous system. Rest and digest. The diaphragm’s movement gently massages the vagus nerve, which runs from your brain down into your abdomen.

This is the main communication line for calm. This isn’t a theory. It’s physiology. You felt your belly rise and fall. That movement is the real work. It’s the signal that everything is okay. You don't have to wait for calm to find you. You can create it, one breath at a time.
