One single deep breath can lower your heart rate in under ten seconds. Last time, we went looking for your one breath of calm. Today, we build the tool that creates it. Find a comfortable position. Seated is fine. Lying down is also fine. Wherever you are, just arrive. Feel the weight of your body supported by the chair, or the floor. Place one hand on your chest, and the other on your belly.
Right over your navel. Just notice your breath for a moment. Don't change anything yet. Feel the movement under your hands. Most of the time, we breathe into our chest. It’s shallow. It’s fast. It’s the body’s breath for fight or flight. When you’re stressed, the hand on your chest is the one that moves. We’re going to change that. We’re going to breathe into the belly.
This is diaphragmatic breathing. It’s the body’s signal for rest and recovery. It tells your nervous system that you are safe. Let’s begin. Through your nose, take a slow, deep breath in. And as you do, focus on letting your belly expand. Push your stomach out into your lower hand. The hand on your chest should barely move. Now, slowly, through your mouth or nose, exhale.
Feel your belly fall. Gently drawing back in. Let’s do that again. Inhale, slow and deep. The belly rises. Filling from the bottom up. Exhale, even slower. The belly falls. Releasing the air completely. Good. Let’s find a rhythm. Inhale… two… three… four… belly full. Exhale… two… three… four… five… six… belly empty. Keep going on your own. The goal is a slow, gentle rise and fall of the hand on your belly.
If your mind wanders, that’s okay. That’s what minds do. Just notice it. And bring your focus back to the feeling of your hand rising… and falling. With every exhale, let something go. Breathe in. Breathe out… and let your shoulders drop away from your ears. Breathe in. Breathe out… and let your jaw unclench. Let the space between your eyebrows soften.
This is the work. Just this. The simple, physical act of breathing with intention. You are telling your body it is time to reset. Take one more deep, full belly breath. The deepest one yet. Fill all the way up. Hold it for just a moment at the top. And now, a long, slow, complete exhale. Let it all go. Let your breathing return to its natural rhythm.
Let your hands rest in your lap. Notice how you feel. Notice the quiet. This isn't a trick. It's your biology. You have direct control over your own state of calm. Use it.
