The average person takes about twenty-three thousand breaths a day. In our last session, we focused on activating your body’s natural calm. Today, we go to the source of that signal. We’re going to find the one breath, out of all those thousands, that tells your body it’s safe. So find a place to settle in. Seated in a chair, or lying on the floor. It doesn’t matter. Just get comfortable. Go ahead and place one hand on your belly.
Right over your navel. Your other hand can rest on your chest. Close your eyes if that feels right for you. Most of those twenty-three thousand breaths are shallow. They live in your chest. They’re fast. That kind of breathing is a signal to your nervous system. It says: stay alert. Be ready. Fight or flight. But you can send a different signal. A better one. A deliberate one. Let’s send it now. Take a slow, deep breath in through your nose.
And as you do, aim that breath for the hand on your belly. Don’t think about it too much—just send the air down. Feel your belly expand, and feel your hand rise. Your chest should barely move. Now, exhale slowly through your mouth. A long, steady stream of air. Feel your belly fall back toward your spine. Feel the hand go down. That’s it. That’s the mechanism. Let's do it again. A slow, deep inhale through the nose.
Filling the belly. One… two… three… four. Feel it expand. Hold it for just a moment at the top. And a long, slow exhale through the mouth. One… two… three… four… five… six. Let it all go. With that breath, let your shoulders drop away from your ears. This is not a metaphor. This is physiology. You are telling your vagus nerve—the main line of communication between your brain and your gut—that you are safe.
Another breath. Inhale deep into the belly. Feel the full expansion. Exhale. Let go. Let the tension in your jaw dissolve. Let the space between your eyebrows soften. Your body believes what your breath tells it. We’ll do a few more cycles in silence. Just you and your breath. Inhale, the hand rises. Exhale, the hand falls. If your mind wanders, that’s fine. That’s what minds do. Just bring it back to the feeling of your hand rising and falling.
Inhale… and exhale. One more. The deepest one yet. Fill all the way up. And a complete release. Let every last bit of air go. Notice the quiet. The space you just created inside yourself. This isn't something you have to hope for. It's something you can build, one breath at a time. You can begin to bring some gentle awareness back to the room. Maybe you wiggle your fingers and your toes. When you’re ready, you can open your eyes.
This feeling of calm is not out there somewhere. It’s right here, under your hand.
