A single deep breath can physically change your brain's instructions to your body. That signal travels up the vagus nerve, the longest nerve in your cranium, telling your heart to slow down and your system to stand down. In our last daily breathwork reset, we talked about recharging your mind and body. Today, we go right to the source.
We are going to learn how to consciously activate that nerve, your body's own brake pedal. Find a comfortable position. Seated or lying down. Let your spine be long. Your shoulders soft. Allow your eyes to gently close. Bring your attention to your breath, just as it is. No need to change anything yet. Just notice the air moving in… and moving out.
Now, place one hand on your chest. And the other hand on your belly, right around your navel. For the next few minutes, your only job is to breathe into the hand on your belly. The hand on your chest should remain almost perfectly still. This is the goal. Let's begin. Take a slow, gentle breath in through your nose, and feel your belly expand like a balloon.
The hand there rises. Now, a long, slow breath out through your mouth. Feel your belly gently fall as you release the air. Again. In through the nose. Belly rises. Chest is quiet. Out through the mouth. Belly falls. Let's add a count to find a rhythm. We'll breathe in for four. Hold for just a moment. And breathe out for six. Ready? Inhale… two… three… four.
Feel the belly swell. Hold. Exhale… two… three… four… five… six. Feel the belly soften. Inhale… two… three… four. The hand on your chest is still. Hold. Exhale… two… three… four… five… six. Releasing completely. Keep this rhythm going. In for four. Out for six. You are not forcing this. You are allowing it. This slow exhale is the signal. This is you, telling your nervous system that you are safe.
That it can rest. Let the breath be deep, but gentle. There is no strain here. If your mind wanders, that's what minds do. Just notice it. And gently guide your attention back to the feeling of your belly rising… and falling. Now, for the next few cycles, I’ll be quiet. Just you and this rhythm. Continue on your own. In for four… out for six.
One more full cycle. The deepest one yet. Inhale… And exhale. Let it all go. Now, let your breath return to its natural rhythm. Let your hands rest in your lap. Keep your eyes closed for another moment. Just notice. Notice the quiet. The stillness inside. This isn't something you found. It's something you created. Breath by breath. When you're ready, you can slowly begin to wiggle your fingers and your toes.
Gently bringing awareness back into the space around you. Take one final, easy breath in. And out. Whenever you feel ready, you can open your eyes. You built this calm. Now, carry it with you.
