One deep belly breath can stimulate the vagus nerve, sending an immediate calm signal directly to your brain. Yesterday, we worked on finding balance with intentional breathing. Today, we go deeper. We target the physical source of stress, not with theory, but with your own body. Let’s begin. Find a comfortable position. Seated, with your spine tall. Or lying down on your back. Whatever lets you feel supported.

Close your eyes if that feels right for you. Bring your awareness to your body in this space. The weight of it. The points of contact with the floor or the chair. Just notice. No judgment. Now, place one hand on the center of your chest. And your other hand on your belly, just below your rib cage. Take a normal breath. Notice which hand moves more. For most of us, it’s the hand on the chest.

We’ve been taught to breathe shallowly. To puff up our chest. Today, we unlearn that. The goal is simple. We’re going to make the bottom hand do all the work. The hand on your chest should stay almost perfectly still. Let’s try. Breathe in slowly through your nose. And as you do, push your belly out into your hand. Imagine a balloon inflating right under your palm. Fill it up. Now, exhale slowly through your mouth.

As you do, feel your belly fall. Use your hand to gently guide it back toward your spine. Empty it all out. That’s one. Let’s do it again. Inhale through your nose, letting your belly expand. Soft. Full. The hand on your chest is quiet. Exhale through your mouth, letting your belly contract. Releasing everything. This is diaphragmatic breathing. This is your body’s built-in off-switch for the fight-or-flight response.

It doesn't work in theory. It just works. Let’s find a rhythm. Inhale... two... three... four. Feel the belly rise. Hold for a moment at the top. Exhale... two... three... four... five... six. Feel the belly fall. Again. Inhale, belly expands. Quiet chest. Exhale, belly contracts. Let the air go. Your only job right now is to move the bottom hand. Nothing else matters. Inhale, the balloon fills. Exhale, the balloon empties.

The hand on your chest is an anchor. It’s the still point. Keep going. At your own pace. If your mind wanders, that’s okay. It’s what minds do. Just notice it. And then bring your focus back to the feeling of your hand rising and falling. The sensation is real. The breath is real. This is not relaxation. This is activation. You are actively telling your nervous system that you are safe. Take one more deep, deliberate breath.

The fullest one yet. Fill your belly completely. And then a long, slow, complete exhale. Let it all go. Let your breathing return to normal. You can let your hands rest in your lap or by your side. Keep your eyes closed for another moment. Notice the shift. The quiet. The space you just created inside yourself. This calm is yours. You made it. You can make it again.
