Your left nostril connects to the right hemisphere of your brain—the side associated with rest and creativity. In our last session, we used our breath for a full system reset. Today, we use it to bring both sides of your brain, and your body, into balance.

Find a comfortable seat. Spine tall, but not rigid. Shoulders soft. Allow your eyes to gently close. Just take a moment here. Feel the ground beneath you. Notice the air on your skin. Bring your awareness to your breath, just as it is.

No need to change anything yet. Simply notice the inhale. And the exhale. Today’s practice is called Alternate Nostril Breathing. It’s a simple, powerful way to calm your nervous system and clear your mind.

Bring your right hand up toward your face. Fold your first two fingers—your index and middle finger—down into your palm. You’ll use your thumb to gently close your right nostril, and your ring finger to gently close your left.

Your hand can rest lightly on your face. No pressure needed. Let’s begin. First, take a deep breath in through both nostrils. And a full breath out. Now, use your right thumb to gently close your right nostril.

Inhale slowly and quietly through your left nostril. For a count of four... three... two... one. Now close your left nostril with your ring finger, so both are gently closed. Hold the breath at the top.

Just for a moment. Release your thumb from your right nostril, and exhale slowly through the right side. Six... five... four... three... two... one. Stay here. Inhale through the right nostril. Four... three...

two... one. Close the right nostril with your thumb. Both are closed. Hold the breath. Feel the stillness. Release your ring finger, and exhale completely through the left nostril. Six... five... four...

three... two... one. That is one complete round. We’ll continue. Close the right. Inhale left. Two. Three. Four. Close the left. Hold. Open the right. Exhale. Two. Three. Four. Five. Six. Inhale right. Two. Three. Four.

Close the right. Hold the breath in. Open the left. Exhale. Two. Three. Four. Five. Six. Continue on your own now. A few more rounds at your own pace. In through the left. Out through the right. In through the right.

Out through the left. Smooth and easy. No force. If your mind wanders, just gently guide it back to the feeling of the breath moving from one side to the other. Let this be your last full round. Finish with the exhale through your left nostril.

When you’re complete, release your hand down to your lap. Keep your eyes closed. Breathe naturally through both nostrils now. Notice how you feel. Notice the quality of the air as it enters. Notice the sense of space in your mind.

A quiet clarity. There is no rush to move. Just be here for a moment. In this balance you’ve created. This stillness is always available to you. You simply have to breathe your way back to it.
