Just one deep belly breath can lower your heart rate by three to five beats per minute, instantly. In our last session together, we found a calm rhythm. Today, we’re going to direct that rhythm to a very specific place in your body. Find your position. Seated, or lying down. It doesn’t matter. What matters is that your spine is long. Your body, supported. Let your eyes close if that feels right.
Or soften your gaze on a single point in the room. Bring your attention to your breath. Just notice it for a moment. Don’t change a thing. Is it shallow? Is it deep? Coming in through the nose, or the mouth? No judgment. Just awareness. Now, place one hand on the center of your chest. And the other hand on your belly, right over your navel. These hands are your guides. Your feedback.
They tell you where the breath is going. For the next few moments, just breathe normally and feel what happens under your palms. Most of us live in our chests. We take shallow, quick breaths that lift the top hand. A survival breath. An anxious breath. Maybe you feel that now. The slight rise and fall under your top hand. The bottom hand, mostly still. That’s okay. That’s the starting point.
Now we’re going to change it. Deliberately. On your next inhale, I want you to imagine you’re sending the air all the way down. Past your chest. Past your ribs. Send it directly into the space beneath your lower hand. Breathe in through your nose… and feel your belly expand. Feel it press gently into your palm. The top hand on your chest… it stays quiet. It stays still. And as you exhale… let the belly soften.
Let it fall away from your hand. Let’s do that again. A slow, deep inhale through the nose… into the belly. Let it rise like a balloon. Hold for just a beat. And a long, slow exhale through the mouth. Feel the navel draw back toward your spine. That’s it. That’s the entire practice. Inhale… belly rises. Chest is still. Exhale… belly falls. There’s no force here. You’re not pushing your stomach out.
You are simply creating space for the diaphragm to drop… allowing the lungs to fill from the bottom up. This is how your body was designed to breathe. Let’s settle into a rhythm. In for four… three… two… one… And out for five… four… three… two… one… Inhale… feel the expansion. Exhale… feel the release. If your mind wanders, and it will… that’s fine. Just notice it. And then guide your attention right back to the feeling of your lower hand rising… and falling.
This breath is an anchor. It pulls you out of the noise in your head and plants you firmly in your body. In this moment. Right here. Two more, on your own. Deep into the belly. Good. Let your breathing return to its natural rhythm. Let your hands rest in your lap. Notice the shift. The quiet. The space you just created. This isn’t just relaxation. It’s control. You now have a tool you can use anywhere.
In a meeting. In traffic. In the middle of a hard conversation. One hand on your belly, a breath no one else can see. This is your anchor in the storm.
