A single, deep breath can trigger your vagus nerve and begin to lower your heart rate in under three seconds. In our last session, we talked about building science-backed routines for calm. This is the foundation of them all. The one you can do anywhere, anytime. So let’s find it. Find a comfortable position. Sitting up is fine. Lying down works too. If you’re sitting, try to have your feet flat on the floor.
Let your spine grow tall, but not rigid. Relax your shoulders down and away from your ears. Close your eyes if that feels right for you. Now, place one hand on your chest. And the other on your belly, right around your navel. For a moment, just notice your breath as it is. No need to change it. Just feel the gentle rise and fall under your hands. Most of the time, we breathe into our chest.
Short, shallow sips of air. That’s survival breathing. We’re going for something different. Take a slow, gentle breath out through your mouth. Empty your lungs completely. Now, breathing in through your nose, I want you to send that breath down, past your chest, into your belly. Imagine you’re inflating a balloon right behind your navel. The hand on your belly should rise.
The hand on your chest should stay relatively still. And now, a slow, controlled exhale through your mouth. Feel your belly fall as the air leaves. Feel your hand lower. Let’s do that again. Inhale through the nose, deep into the belly. Feel it expand. One… two… three… four. Exhale slowly through the mouth. Feel it contract. One… two… three… four… five… six. Making the exhale just a little longer than the inhale.
This is the rhythm. Let's settle into it. Inhale through the nose… belly rises. Exhale through the mouth… belly falls. Releasing. Your mind will wander. That’s what minds do. When it does, just notice it, and gently guide your attention back. Back to the feeling of your hand rising and falling. Inhale… filling up. Exhale… letting go. With this breath, let go of any tension in your jaw.
Let your tongue fall from the roof of your mouth. Another slow breath in… feeling the air move down. And a long breath out… softening the space between your eyebrows. Softening your shoulders. This isn’t about forcing. It’s about allowing. Allowing your body to do what it knows how to do. Your diaphragm is the muscle of breath. You’re just reminding it how to work.
One more, together. The deepest, slowest one yet. Inhale. And exhale. Fully. Completely. Now, let your breathing return to its natural rhythm. No more counting. No more effort. You can let your hands rest in your lap. Just sit here for a moment. In the quiet. Notice how you feel. Notice the shift. Maybe a little more space. A little more stillness. This isn’t a magic trick.
It's physiology. You just took direct, conscious control of your nervous system. You told your body it was safe. And it listened. When you’re ready, you can slowly open your eyes. This breath is always available to you. Three seconds is all it takes to begin.
