A Stanford University study published in Cell Reports Medicine found that five minutes of controlled, slow breathing per day reduces physiological anxiety more effectively than mindfulness meditation. Last time, we used the structure of the 4-7-8 technique. A powerful tool. Today we move from structure to source. Find a place where you can be for the next few minutes.

Seated in a chair, or lying on the floor. It doesn't matter, as long as your spine can be long and you can be undisturbed. Go ahead and place one hand on your chest, right in the center. Place your other hand on your belly, just above your navel. Close your eyes if that feels right for you. For a moment, just notice your breath as it is. Don't change anything.

Just feel the movement under your hands. The rise and fall. You probably feel more movement under the hand on your chest. That's normal. That’s how most of us breathe all day. Shallow. A survival breath. It tells your nervous system to stay on alert. We're about to send it a new message. The goal here is simple. We're going to make the hand on your belly do all the work.

The hand on your chest should stay quiet. Still. Your hands are your teachers here. They give you real-time feedback on what's actually working. Let's begin. Take a slow, deep breath in through your nose, and as you do, consciously push your belly out into your hand. Feel it expand. Feel it rise. The hand on your chest stays still. Hold it for just a moment at the top.

And now, a long, slow, complete exhale through your mouth. Feel your belly fall back toward your spine. Let every last bit of air go. Keep exhaling even when you think you're empty. That’s one. That is the entire practice. Let’s do it again. A slow inhale through your nose. The belly expands, pushing into your hand. The chest is quiet. And a gentle, full exhale through your mouth.

Let it all go. Again. Inhale. Your belly is a balloon, filling with air. Exhale. The balloon deflates. Softly. Completely. Continue now at your own pace. No need to force it. No need to count. Your only job is the feeling. The rise of your belly on the inhale. The release on the exhale. If your mind wanders, and it will, just notice. And then gently guide your attention back to the feeling of your hand rising and falling.

This is the breath your body remembers. This is how you breathed as a baby. Deep. Safe. Grounded. You’re just reminding yourself how. Take one more deep belly breath. The deepest one yet. Fill all the way up. And let it go with a sigh. Let your breathing return to its natural pace. Let your hands rest in your lap. Keep your eyes closed for just another moment.

Notice the shift. The quiet. The stillness you just created inside yourself. Gently, when you are ready, you can open your eyes. You don't need an hour. You don't need a quiet room. You just needed five minutes and your own two hands.
