A 2013 study found that just fifteen minutes of alternate nostril breathing measurably lowers your heart rate and blood pressure. Last time, we talked about finding calm through brain synchronization. This is one of the most ancient and direct ways to create that balance yourself. So let’s begin. Find a comfortable, tall seat.

Spine straight, but not stiff. Shoulders rolling back and down. Let your hands rest in your lap for just a moment. Close your eyes. And just notice your breath. Don’t change it yet. Simply feel the air moving in and out of both nostrils. One side might feel more open than the other. That’s normal. That’s what we’re here to balance.

Now, bring your right hand up toward your face. You can let your left hand rest on your knee, palm up. With your right hand, gently fold down your index finger and your middle finger, so they touch your palm. Your thumb, your ring finger, and your little finger are extended. This is the hand position. Bring your hand to your nose.

Your thumb will rest lightly on your right nostril. Your ring finger will rest on your left. We begin. Gently press your right thumb against your right nostril to close it. And now, through your open left nostril… inhale. Slowly. Two. Three. Four. Hold the breath at the top. Use your ring finger to close your left nostril, and release your thumb from the right.

Exhale through the right nostril. Two. Three. Four. Five. Six. Stay here. Inhale through the right nostril. Two. Three. Four. Hold. Close the right nostril with your thumb, release the left. Exhale through the left nostril. Two. Three. Four. Five. Six. That was one round. We’ll do it again. Inhale left. Two. Three. Four. Close. Exhale right.

Two. Three. Four. Five. Six. Inhale right. Two. Three. Four. Close. Exhale left. Two. Three. Four. Five. Six. Continue on your own now. The rhythm is yours. Inhale left. Exhale right. Inhale right. Exhale left. Slow and steady. No rush. There is nowhere else to be. Balancing the right and left sides of your brain. The active and the restful sides of your body.

Keep going. If your mind wanders, just bring it back to the feeling of the air. The simple rhythm. Now, finish the cycle you are on. Complete the exhale through your left nostril. And when you’re done… gently release your hand back down to your lap. Keep your eyes closed. Be still. Just notice. Notice the quiet. The space you’ve created inside your own head.

Feel the equal flow of air in both nostrils. The deep sense of equilibrium. This is your center. Take one more deep, easy breath in through both nostrils. And let it go with a sigh. Slowly, when you’re ready, you can open your eyes. The balance you feel now is yours to carry.
