You take over twenty-three thousand breaths a day. Last time, we used the 4-7-8 count to reset just a few of them, to find a moment of calm. Today, you’ll learn to give your breath a voice. Find your seat. Feel the chair supporting you. Back straight, but not stiff. Shoulders down. Close your eyes, or just soften your gaze to the floor in front of you. Let your breath be normal for a moment.

In and out through your nose. We’re going to find a breath called Ujjayi. Ocean Breath. It’s called that because you are going to make a sound like the ocean. Gentle. Rhythmic. Constant. Let’s start with the exhale. Take a normal breath in through your nose. Now, open your mouth and exhale with a “haaaaaaah” sound, like you’re trying to fog up a mirror in front of you.

Try it again. Inhale through the nose. Exhale “haaaaaaah.” Feel that slight closing in the back of your throat? That’s where the sound comes from. It’s the glottis, gently constricting. Now, do the exact same thing, but with your mouth closed. Inhale through your nose. And as you exhale through your nose, create that same fog-the-mirror feeling in your throat.

You should hear a soft, rushing sound. Like a distant wave pulling back from the shore. That’s it. Don’t force it. It’s not a snore. It’s a whisper. Let’s try a few more. Inhale quietly. Exhale with the ocean sound. Inhale. Exhale. Now for the other side. The inhale. This is the same technique, just in reverse. Keep that gentle constriction in your throat as you breathe IN through your nose.

The air will make the same sound as it passes over that spot. It might feel a little strange. Like sipping air through a wide straw. That’s okay. Let’s put it together. A slow inhale through the nose, making the ocean sound. Followed by a slow exhale through the nose, making the same ocean sound. Let’s begin. I’ll count us for the first few. Inhale… two… three… four… Exhale… two… three… four… five… six… Make the exhale a little longer than the inhale.

Inhale with the sound… Exhale with the sound… Keep going on your own. Find your own rhythm. The sound is your anchor. It fills the space. Listen to it. Let it be the only thing you hear. Your body is relaxed. Your face is soft. Your jaw is unclenched. The only effort is that gentle whisper in your throat. This breath is heating your body from the inside out. Building a steady, focused energy.

You are not just listening to the ocean. You are the ocean. The steady, powerful, rhythmic pull and release. One more full cycle. The deepest one yet. Inhale the sound. Exhale the sound. Now, let it go. Release the technique. Let your breath return to normal. Breathing in and out through your nose. Silently. Notice the echo. The stillness. The space you just created.

That rhythm is yours now. You know how to find it. One steady breath is always there, waiting for you.
