A single five-minute session of equal, balanced breathing can reduce the stress hormone cortisol by up to twenty percent. In our last session, we reset with a few different practices. Today, we are going to master just one. Find a comfortable position. Seated is good, with your spine long. But lying down works too. Close your eyes if that feels right for you.

Just for a moment, do nothing. Don't change your breath. Don't fix your posture. Just arrive right here. Feel the support beneath you. The chair, the floor. Feel the weight of your body settling into that support. Now, bring your attention to your breath. The natural rhythm of it. Notice the quiet rise of your chest and belly on the inhale... and the gentle fall on the exhale.

No judgment. No need to change anything yet. You are just observing. We are going to practice a technique called Sama Vritti. It’s Sanskrit for ‘equal fluctuation’. Equal breathing. The pattern is simple. We will inhale for a count of four... and exhale for a count of four. Let's begin. First, exhale all the air from your lungs. Gently. Completely. Now.

Inhale through your nose... two... three... four. Exhale through your nose... two... three... four. Again. Inhale... two... three... four. Exhale... two... three... four. Smooth and steady. Inhale... two... three... four. And release... two... three... four. Continue on your own now. I’ll keep the space for you. Your only job is the count. Four in. Four out. If the mind wanders—and it will—that’s okay.

That’s what minds do. Don’t fight it. Don’t follow it. Just notice that you’ve drifted... and gently guide your attention back. Back to the count. Inhale... two... three... four. Exhale... two... three... four. Feel the air as it enters your body. Cool. Feel the air as it leaves. Warm. This breath is an anchor in the present moment. Nothing else matters right now.

Just this breath. This count. Try not to rush the count. And try not to stretch it. Find the rhythm that is steady. Effortless. You are not forcing the breath. You are simply giving it a structure. A container. And inside that container, there is calm. Let’s do three more rounds together. Inhale... two... three... four. Exhale... two... three... four. Inhale...

two... three... four. Exhale... two... three... four. Last one. Make it your best one. Inhale... two... three... four. Exhale... two... three... four. Now... let the counting dissolve. Release control. Let your breath return to its own natural rhythm. And just be still for a moment. Notice how you feel. Notice the quiet space you've created inside yourself. This stillness was here all along.

The breath just cleared the path. When you're ready, begin to bring some gentle awareness back to your body. Maybe a wiggle of your fingers. A roll of your shoulders. Slowly, gently, when it feels right... open your eyes. The rhythm is yours to keep.
