Breathing at a rhythm of roughly six breaths per minute can synchronize your heart rate variability and your brainwaves. In our last session, we used the 4-7-8 technique to find an immediate sense of calm.
Today, we use a steady rhythm to build a state of deep coherence. Let's begin. Find a comfortable position. Seated, with your spine tall but not rigid. Or lying down, if that feels right for you today. Allow your eyes to gently close.
Or soften your gaze on a single point in front of you. Just for a moment… do nothing. Simply arrive. Noticing the weight of your body. The contact it makes with the chair or the floor. And now… bring your awareness to your breath.
Don't change it. Just notice it. The rise and fall of your chest. The air moving in and out of your nostrils. The practice today is simple. We will breathe in for a count of five. And breathe out for a count of five.
A smooth, continuous circle of breath. No pause at the top. No pause at the bottom. Let's try one together. Inhale… two… three… four… five. Exhale… two… three… four… five. That’s the rhythm. Let’s find it together.
Releasing any tension in your jaw… your shoulders. Let’s begin. Inhale… two… three… four… five. Exhale… two… three… four… five. Inhale… two… three… four… five. Exhale… two… three… four… five. Inhale… two… three… four… five.
Exhale… two… three… four… five. Now, on your own. I’ll keep the time. Just the rhythm. In… Out… In… Out… In… Out… Letting the breath be effortless. Smooth. Continuous. In… Out… In… Out… Your only job is to follow this circle of breath.
If the mind wanders, gently guide it back. In… Out… In… Out… Now… let go of the counting. Just for this last minute. Keep the rhythm, but release the effort of counting. Just feeling the wave of the breath. Allowing the body to breathe itself.
And now… gently release the rhythm entirely. Let your breath return to its natural state. Whatever that is for you. Just sit in the stillness for a moment. Noticing any shifts. Any changes in your body or your mind.
When you feel ready… you can begin to bring some gentle movement back to your fingers and toes. Maybe a slow stretch. And when you are ready… you can allow your eyes to open. Bringing your awareness back into the space around you.
You built this calm. It is yours to carry with you.
