The 4-7-8 breathing technique can measurably lower your heart rate in under sixty seconds. Yesterday, we explored the power of guided rhythms for finding clarity. Today, we are going to use one very specific rhythm to bring your body into a state of deep rest.
First, find a comfortable position. You can be sitting with your back straight, or lying down. It doesn’t matter. Just be somewhere you can let go for the next few minutes. Allow your eyes to close, or soften your gaze toward the floor.
Now, place the tip of your tongue against the ridge of tissue just behind your upper front teeth. You’ll keep it there for the entire exercise. We’ll exhale through the mouth around the tongue. It might feel a little strange. That’s okay.
Here is the rhythm. We will inhale quietly through the nose for a count of FOUR. We will hold the breath for a count of SEVEN. And we will exhale completely through the mouth, making a soft whoosh sound, for a count of EIGHT. That’s it.
Four, seven, eight. The exhale is the most important part. It needs to be twice as long as the inhale. This is what tells your nervous system to stand down. Let’s begin. First, let all the air out of your lungs with a full exhale. Now.
Close your mouth and inhale through your nose. ONE… TWO… THREE… FOUR. Hold the breath. ONE… TWO… THREE… FOUR… FIVE… SIX… SEVEN. And exhale through your mouth with a whoosh. ONE… TWO… THREE… FOUR… FIVE… SIX… SEVEN… EIGHT. That is one breath.
Let’s do it again. Inhale through your nose. ONE… TWO… THREE… FOUR. Hold. ONE… TWO… THREE… FOUR… FIVE… SIX… SEVEN. Exhale through your mouth. ONE… TWO… THREE… FOUR… FIVE… SIX… SEVEN… EIGHT. Good. Two more times. Just follow the count. Inhale.
ONE… TWO… THREE… FOUR. Hold. ONE… TWO… THREE… FOUR… FIVE… SIX… SEVEN. Exhale. ONE… TWO… THREE… FOUR… FIVE… SIX… SEVEN… EIGHT. Last one. Make it your deepest release yet. Inhale. ONE… TWO… THREE… FOUR. Hold it. ONE… TWO… THREE… FOUR… FIVE… SIX… SEVEN.
Let it all go. ONE… TWO… THREE… FOUR… FIVE… SIX… SEVEN… EIGHT. Now, just let your breath return to its natural rhythm. Let your tongue rest where it feels comfortable. Notice the quiet. Notice the stillness in your body. You did not create this calm.
You simply revealed it. It was already there, underneath the noise. This tool is yours now. A sixty-second reset you can use anytime, anywhere. The peace you feel right now is your own.
