A slow exhale can activate your vagus nerve in less than three seconds, sending a direct signal to your nervous system that it is safe. In our last session, we talked about the power of a daily reset. Today, we give that reset a specific shape. A specific rhythm. So let's begin. Find a comfortable seat.
You don't need a special cushion or a quiet room. Just be where you are. Feel your feet on the floor. Or your body in the chair. Let your hands rest in your lap, palms up or down. It doesn't matter. Close your eyes if that feels right for you. Or just soften your gaze, looking at a point on the floor a few feet in front of you.
Let your shoulders drop away from your ears. Unclench your jaw. Notice your breath. Don't try to change it yet. Just notice the air moving in and out. The natural rhythm of your body. Today, we’re going to practice what’s known as Box Breathing. It’s a simple, powerful tool. The pattern is four-four-four-four.
You will inhale for a count of four. You will hold your breath for a count of four. You will exhale for a count of four. And you will hold the breath out for a count of four. A simple, steady box. Let’s try one together. First, a gentle exhale to empty your lungs. And begin. Inhale… two… three… four.
Hold… two… three… four. Exhale… two… three… four. Hold… two… three… four. That’s it. That’s the entire practice. Let’s do another round. Breathe in… two… three… four. Hold the breath… two… three… four. Breathe out… two… three… four. Hold the space… two… three… four. Now, for the next few minutes, I will guide you with just one word for each part of the breath.
The rest is silence. Your job is just to follow the rhythm. Let’s begin. Inhale. Hold. Exhale. Hold. Inhale. Hold. Exhale. Hold. Inhale. Hold. Exhale. Hold. Keep going. On your own. I’ll be here. One more full round. Together. Ready? Inhale… two… three… four. Hold… two… three… four. Exhale… two… three… four.
Hold… two… three… four. Now, let your breath return to its natural rhythm. No counting. No holding. Just breathing. Notice how you feel. Not judging it. Just noticing. The stillness. The space you created. This feeling isn’t something you found. It was already here. You just gave it room to breathe.
