A single minute of controlled breathing can increase your heart rate variability by ten percent. Last time, we talked about using the breath to reset your nervous system. Today, we put that principle into practice. We’re going to use a simple, powerful technique called Box Breathing. It's a tool used by people who need to be calm and focused under immense pressure.
Surgeons. Navy SEALs. And now, you. So let’s begin. Find a comfortable seat. You can be on a chair with your feet flat on the floor, or sitting on a cushion. It doesn't matter. Just be somewhere you can be still for the next few minutes. Let your hands rest in your lap. Close your eyes if that feels right for you. First, just notice your breath as it is. No need to change it.
Just feel the air entering your nose... and leaving it. The pattern is simple. It's a square. Four sides, all equal. We will inhale for a count of four. Hold the breath for a count of four. Exhale for a count of four. And hold the breath out for a count of four. That’s it. That’s one cycle. Let’s try it together. First, a gentle exhale to empty your lungs. Let it all go. Now.
Inhale… two… three… four. Hold… two… three… four. Exhale… two… three… four. Hold… two… three… four. That’s one. Let’s do it again. Inhale… two… three… four. Smooth and steady. Hold the breath at the top… two… three… four. Exhale slowly… two… three… four. Push all the air out. Hold at the bottom… two… three… four. Again. Your own count now. I'll guide the rhythm. Inhale. Hold.
Exhale. Hold. Keep going. Find the rhythm of the square. Inhale… filling up. Hold… a moment of stillness. Exhale… letting go. Hold… emptiness and quiet. Your mind will wander. That's what minds do. When it does, just bring it back. Bring it back to the count. Your only job right now is the number four. Notice the small space you create in the pauses. The quiet at the top of the inhale.
The stillness at the bottom of the exhale. That space is yours. Let’s do two more cycles together. Inhale. Hold. Exhale. Hold. Last one. Make it your best one. Even and controlled. Inhale. Hold. Exhale. Hold. Now, let your breathing return to its natural rhythm. Just let your body breathe you. Keep your eyes closed for another moment. Notice how you feel. Notice the quiet. The calm.
You didn't find this calm. You made it. With your breath. With your attention. This tool is always with you. Four seconds in. Four seconds hold. Four seconds out. Four seconds hold. When you’re ready, slowly open your eyes. You built this stillness. Now, take it with you.
